Weezer’s New Single ‘Thank God for Girls’ is Beautifully Bizarre

Weezer released a new single titled “Thank God for Girls”, and there is a lot to unpack here.

First, there’s the song itself, which frontman Rivers Cuomo declared better than the lead single from their 2014 album Everything Will Be Alright in the End, “Back to the Shack”. Where “Back to the Shack” is more of a throwback to yesteryear, “Thank God For Girls” is more self-contained, a new idea that makes effective use of organ and piano while still totally rocking.

Then there’s the single art:

Playing off the religious aspect with a photo of the Pope and adoring female onlookers is a fun touch. It would have been stronger if the typography was actually embroidered on the Pope’s holy vestments, but there is only so much Weezer could have done.

Then there’s the video, above. It plays off the couple of lyrics about cannolis by having our long-haired protagonist go nuts on a platter of them. It’s important to note that this isn’t the song’s official video and is more of a lyric video, as the band has said that an official video is forthcoming. Regardless, it’s definitely a strong clip to start with.

Lastly, there’s the lyrics, which are completely bonkers. Cuomo said of them, “The lyrics sound pretty out there and remind me of my tumblr work. Very unique, very different, a bit dark.” For context, here’s a snippet from his most recent tumblr post: “I started going to massage parlors again. But I don’t let them…you know. (She was so surprised.) I actually may not even run into him. He’s like a billionaire. He’s just doing this for fun. What the hell was that? It sounded like a mosquito.”

The lyrics for “Thank God For Girls” are equally abstract and avant-garde, so check them out here, and let us know in the comments if you can make any sense of them, and what you think of the song as a whole.
