Weekend Earworms: Get Loopy With Bernhoft and Mac Lethal

An estimated 98% of us experience earworms. Despite the annoying times that we can’t get a chorus or a hook of an overplayed pop song out of our heads, getting a really good earworm stuck can be one of the best things ever.

We here at Nerdist are dead-set on bringing you those types of songs, if only for the weekend. We’ll be scouring the internet for the best earworms we can shove into your meaty brains!

Hello again and welcome to the article you’re currently reading! This being the 5th installment of Weekend Earworms, I’ve noticed that I desperately want to use the same artists each week. As I randomly listen to music with no real rhyme or reason – err… I mean, as I conduct extensive research on a weekly basis; it causes me to be so incredibly on-board with each artist’s work that I find myself having to make a concerted effort to not just post the same things over and over again. A wise man named Homer J. Simpson said it best: “The lesson is: never try”, because of course this week’s effort to avoid repeating anything at all only made great songs that involve looping to work their way into my head.

Bernhoft – Cmon Talk

Some of you may know of Norwegian singer Jarle Bernhoft and his incredible skill of sampling, well, himself to create some incredibly full songs. Looping guitar, vocals, percussion and even a bit of beat boxing into one cohesive song is not an easy task and yet Bernhoft seems to do so with minimal effort. It’s a skill that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Head down to guitar center and try making anything resembling a decent sounding simple loop and realize that Bernhoft’s result in the sound of a full band. Play “Cmon Talk” again or “Choices” and then scroll away from the video and you’d forget it’s just one guy.

Cool Norwegian looped music not your style? Well let’s bring it back to the good ol US of A with a healthy serving of Missouri hip hop. Yes. That IS technically a thing. Especially when it comes to…

Mac Lethal – Beatbox + iPhone + Guitar + Fast Rap

Rapper, occasional Ellen guest, and creator of the hilarious Texts From Bennett – Mac Lethal has most recently become a staple on YouTube with videos showing off his incredible lyrical ability. This video has the most lethal of Macs using an iPhone to loop bits of the song and then blowing our minds with the fast lyrics we’ve come to know and love. I call shenanigans if you’re not mimicking the whistle in the song at some point over the next day or so. The song itself was Lethal’s response to the Sandy Hook shooting of 2012 and can be purchased here. The description of the video states that “Proceeds will be donated to the families of the Newtown, CT victims”. So yeah, go buy it.

There’s no doubt I’ll spend the next week tempted to post even more Mac Lethal so I’ll just take care of it here and provide links to his Alphabet and Mozart raps.

What are your favorite examples of musicians looping things? Keep in mind that if you mention Ed Sheeran it means we can no longer be friends. Lets get loopy in the comments!
