We only recently learned about Lucasfilm’s brand new animated film Strange Magic, but the first trailer is already here. The movie features a story by George Lucas and is inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The fairy tale has fairies (duh), imps, elves, goblins, and more magical creatures. They find themselves involved in a battle as the big bad of the film tries to get his hands on a greedy potion. Also, it’s a musical. Pop songs from the last six decades are part of the movie’s soundtrack, and you can get an idea of how that works in the trailer. Watch:
The first thing that strikes me about the trailer isn’t the characters or the teased plot, it’s the beauty of the animation. The creature design is top notch, and the lighting and textures are stunning. Strange Magic, directed by Gary Rydstrom, will look impressive on the big screen. Beyond the pleasing visuals, the trailer doesn’t showcase anything I feel excited about. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays and my heart automatically warms to any kind of fairy tale, but nothing in this trailer makes me feel excited about the January 23rd release date.
What we see of the world, the music, and the humor hits a bland note. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before. That said, trailers aren’t always a reliable representation of what the film’s about. If I would have seen all the Frozen trailers that focused on Olaf, I might not have been inclined to see the animated film and learn it was about so much more than a talking snowman.

From the “mind” of George Lucas? Well, ok, if “they” say so. In the meantime, while the so-called animation DOES impress, there is simply NOTHING of substance in this trailer that causes me to consider seeing it, and MUCH that makes me wonder WHAT “mind”?
Is it just me or does anyone else think Arthur and the Invisibles?
I agree with Anna, it looks like Epic with better animation and (I would add) a much, much chaotic story-line. Granted, you can’t gather much from a 2 minute trailer – but what we did see was confusing, disconnected and uninteresting. Glad to see Lucas has not lost the magic he brought us in the prequels and Indiana Jones 4. Ugh.
Looks very much like Epic, with better animation.

This looks terrible, whhhyyy Lucas, wwwhhhyyyyyy
The mind of George Lucas… it gave us Star Wars. Then it gave us Jar Jar Binks.
…I think it’s planning to give us a little bit of both this time.
The animation work is absolutely stunning, and everything else seems like it was done slap-dash at the last minute when they realized it wasn’t enough to just be pretty.
pretty much exactly what i was gonna say. Looks great, but holy crap this is basically Food Fight. A million characters being introduced with no real purpose. It’s like they realized at the last minute that parents might actually be watching with their kids, so the movie might need to have some sort of purpose
Cop Rock comes to mind.
Is it just me, or was there alot of mouth sync issues?
Epic with tired pop songs? Man… SO glad Lucas let go of Star Wars!
The villian, and armor for the “good” guys look similar to the Movie Epic
Cute!
