Watch THE MUNSTERS Rock Opera This Halloween!

Like a lot of horror fans, I’ve always had a soft spot for The Munsters, that Universal Monsters-inspired sitcom that served as a kind of lowbrow alternative to The Addams Family for two seasons back in the 1960s. Now, one intrepid TV network has taken it upon itself to introduce Herman, Lily, Marilyn, Eddie, and Grandpa to a new generation in the form of a 21st Century musical. COZI TV, which airs pop classics like The Six Million Dollar Man and Magnum P.I., is presenting Auto-Tune The Munsters: A Rock Opera tonight, on Halloween. This TV special reworks the Munsters episode “A Man for Marilyn”, and features five new songs by composers Jamie Lawrence and Paul Rolnick that range from light pop to psychedelic to Broadway show tune to “boy-band-esque.” It’s presented as part of a holiday marathon of the series, and airs at 8P/7C and 11 P/10C.

Here’s a clip from the special, which finds Marilyn Munster once more having trouble holding onto a suitor after he catches sight of her decidedly offbeat family…

According to Mental Floss, “Not every song was taken verbatim from the 1965 version’s discourse. The B-story was left out for time purposes, as were details from certain scenes. Original choruses were added in some instances, verses in others.” The end result looks to not only hook new viewers on The Munsters, but start a new holiday tradition to boot.
