Watch “The Fox”, Norway’s Most Balls-Trippingly Insane Music Video

“What the actual fuck, Norway?” Those are the words the rang out in our offices after the entire Nerdist editorial staff gathered around my laptop to watch “The Fox”, a brand new music video from Norwegian brother duo Ylvis. Honestly, I thought that we’d seen the height of balls to the wall, people in animal suits craziness from Max Landis’ Animal Fighting Championships, but evidently that was just the tip of the WTF iceberg. This insanely catchy anthem is a bit like Norway’s answer to “Old McDonald Had a Farm,” if the song was dipped in a boiling vat of MDMA. Bard and Vegard Ylvisaker have firmly cemented themselves as the next viral video phenomenon, so brace yourselves for the inevitable wave of YouTube parodies.

What do you think of “The Fox”? What sound does a fox make? Let us know in the comments below!

    That’s not at all annoying.

  2. Ashley says:

I sincerely don’t understand why people like this. But then, I also don’t understand why people like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift… Give me some Brand New, and we’re golden!

  3. weeeehuuu says:

Just to let you all know, these guys do NOT have a band. They are comedians, and bloody brilliant ones too 😉

  4. Ms Myriad says:

Foxes bark, yip, growl, and “yiff,” which leads into a whole realm of Furry puns

  5. Bill Barnes says:

I love this zany video. I think I’m moving to Norway! In case anyone really wants to know “what the fox say”…

  6. Jonny Svarliaunet says:

Who ever said comedy had to be smart? I’m loving theese guys. They have a talkshow on norwegian TV where they often make weird, and unmeaningful musical bits. Sort of like the “SNL Shorts” with Andy Samberg and The Lonley Island guys. I thought “The Fox” was a good one, but here’s my favourite:

Someone got a “See And Say” for Christmas !!!!

  8. Riskie says:

Seriously amazing. Music need to be challenged and we need to think outside of the square. These guys are pioneers. Sounds track was fantastic aswell. Gave me fox bumps lol

  9. alli says:

I used to live across the street from a family of urban foxes. Yes, urban foxes – a vixen, a reynard and their two kits. They have some cute vocalizations but they also have a call that sounds like a woman being murdered. Seriously. The first time I heard it I thought the neighbor was being butchered by a homicidal maniac. Scared the everloving crap out of me.

As for the song – it’s god awful…maybe it lost something in translation, but I honestly just found myself thinking these guys were dumb city boys who’ve never set foot on unpaved ground and don’t know how to use a search engine. Just. Awful.

So, if I had to hazard a guess, I’d bet a fox would say “Haven’t you ever heard of Google?…”

  10. Nate says:

Wow, that comment by John Keefer was pretty balls-trippingly insane!

The video, not so much, it was just a cute little comedy thing that borrows much too heavily from Gangnam Style and other similar sources to genuinely “go viral” to the same degree. It’s already gotten more attention than they had probably anticipated, though, so everybody wins! Well, everybody except for people who take comments on message boards and blog posts so seriously that it inspires them to rant and rave and grump out, of course . . .

  11. BallToTheWalls says:

Foxes scream. Look it up. It’s the most horrible sound ever.

  12. Sheri says:

Wow, that was amazingly stupid and funny. I believe foxes “yip” actually.:)

  13. Carmen says:

It made me LMAO. It was great. And I am American proud and alive and well living better than you angry SOB John Keefer. There is a God America is alive and well and way better educated than a moron like you narcissist who has the longest inane comment on this that was unprovoked. I know that was one heck of a run on sentence, but you don’t deserve anything more. Bring you own death on if you hate this world so much and the ignorant people you have to exist with. Somehow I doubt you are a native Norwegian. God Bless you and the rest of the world.

  14. Louis says:

And, of course, most Americans consider watching Miley Cyrus having an epileptic seizure on stage to be wholesome family entertainment. 😛
    This, however, was fun.

  15. harlowe says:

It’s good clean fun and it makes you want to dance. Dance like whimsical, forest pixie you are hiding deep down, under your utter contempt for everything.

  16. Dawn Laurant says:

Foxes everywhere are either having a good laugh or signing up for dance lessons.

  20. Steamboat says:

Go immediately to Youtube and watch their other videos.

    Stonehenge
    Work it
    etc.

  21. Bob says:

Another example of man’s slipping into the dark slimy depths of TOTALLY F’ing STUPID by the brain fried of youth of today.
Unless of course this is for a small children’s show then it’s just merely fox crap.
I’m thinking how many starving kids and people could have been fed with the money wasted on making that CRAP. Ready for parody videos? With the crap brains of people today I wouldn’t doubt it.

  22. Lars Toervik says:

I live near Bergen in Norway, where the Ylvis brothers are from. This music video is some kind of promotion for a new TV show they are starting with on september 10th this year…

  23. Monique says:

I’m an American and I loved PSY’s Gangnam style. I also enjoy Flight of the Conchords. This not so much it seems formulaic in it’s approach. It’s too well executed.

  24. Matt Howard says:

The answer to the question is simple. Just ask George Clooney. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RiSHTpygnw

  25. John Keefer says:

Why do people make the same inane comments over and over again? In the “wtf” vein or in the “balls” line? Why bother expressing your inane or short sighted opinions? Speaking of which is everyone in America visually illiterate? “What did I just watch?” You watched a comedy video you xenophobe. Every comment has an underlying sense of “those weird foreigners” sentiment to it and you have the gall to plug one of your own videos on your own website, as if it’s not enough that in order for someone to see the plug they would have to be here already. You greedy bastards. The video is funny and clever and inventive. I enjoyed it. To feign bemusement at how “crazy” it is is to demonstrate what a moron you actually are. This isn’t the usual vitriol spewed on these message boards, its a call to reason. Is this any crazier than Tim and Eric? Or for that matter anime that’s been around for, oh, ever? Are you really so blown away by the weirdness of this video? In this day and age? Or are you expressing an insincere sentiment on a comment thread for god knows what reason. There is no god. There is no america. And death cannot come soon enough.

  26. Doc says:

I’m a little disappointed that Fisher-Price’s See ‘N Say didn’t even get partial credit for the lyrics.

  27. brion says:

i felt my brain cells dying. can i get a refund for those 4 minutes of my life ?

  28. cher says:

Foxes actually scream at night…it’s a horrifying sound to be woken up with. Although this video gives the fox scream a run for its money!! LOL

  29. rocknrollgidget says:

Why is this being released now? Obviously it should be Norway’s next Eurovision entry. It’s just batshit insane enough to be a contender.

  30. Nicola says:

gangnam style was popular…why not this?

More people are watching this now than they have ever watched any other video from the band. It is the most brilliant video ever for them.

  31. Colleen says:

    ..wow..just. wow.

  32. ericmci says:

Japanese pop culture just shit itself.

  33. Harry says:

I wish I hadn’t seen this. A lot of effort. An inane concept.

  34. Paula says:

what the fox? this is insane/brilliant

  35. Mynde says:

    O: I like it!

  36. Shonna says:

    *snort*

  37. Robin says:

    They bark, I’ve heard them
