Watch the First Trailer for THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1

The first trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 has arrived! It doesn’t feature Katniss or any kind of update on her current situation but instead offers a message from the Capitol of Panem. President Snow (Donald Sutherland) addresses the Districts with Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) by his side and praises Panem’s system of government and emphasizes unity. If the Districts stand with him, they will be fed and protected. If they stand against him, they will bleed. Yeah, President Snow invented the creepy vibe.

Though the minute long trailer doesn’t show any footage from the upcoming film, the minimalistic style nails the tone. Panem is on the precipice of a revolution. For the first time in a long while, President Snow feels threatened by the citizens of the Districts, and as we’ve seen when he came up with the Quarter Quell, he’s willing to take drastic actions to keep Panem under his control. He knows using Peeta in his broadcast will get under Katniss’ skin, and that it could also sway citizens in his favor. If a champion of the Hunger Games stands beside President Snow, why shouldn’t everyone?

Given that they’ve shared this propaganda video from the Capitol, I hope the next trailer features Katniss and other members of the rebellion speaking to the citizens of Panem. It would be a perfect follow-up before seeing a full trailer for the film. I have a hunch we’ll get the latter at San Diego Comic-Con.

What do you think of this approach to the first trailer for Mockingjay – Part 1? Volunteer as tribute in the comments and let us know.

  1. I am continually impressed by the execution of this series. Well done.

  2. Kristen says:

    Brilliant

  3. Liz says:

    Nice George Wallace reference

  4. dj says:

If I were the studios, I would make a series of” we remember” propos for trailer/ tv spots those could be subtle but genius marketing

  5. Looking forward to the District 13 propos!

  6. Katniss says:

they need to give Peeta back and i also cant wait for the movie to come out and i will also cry

  7. Stash says:

Ok so I just went to the panem site… this stuff is gold! it’s even better than the X-Men: Days Of Futures Past Trask Enterprise site!

  8. Supreme Power says:

I loved it! Can’t wait for the next one.
(btw, Pres. Snow didn’t come up with the Quarter Quell. That’d mean he was president for more than fifty years by that point, and I don’t think they were going for ‘Donald Sutherland is Fidel Castro’ kinda thing)

    • Cupcake says:

President Snow changed the Quarter Quell to put Katniss and the other victors back in the Hunger Games to “make them extinct.”  He did it to try to snuff out the rebellion, but it further ignited it.

    • K says:

did you read the book? Pres Snow did come up with the Quarter Quell. He just made it look like he didn’t in order to keep peace in Panem. He and Plutarch came up with that idea to try and get rid of Katniss without upsetting Panem.

      • KarrotKake says:

The Quarter Quell was a standing tradition every 25 years. A “special” games to mark the 25th, 50th, and 75th anniversary of the war. President Snow simply made use of something that already existed, he didn’t create it.

  9. Stash says:

From here on out this needs to be how most if not all the hunger games trailers should be. We are all already hooked on the series soo use the trailers and promotions as part of the series and leave us in the dark on what the film’ll be like untill we actually see it.

    • Ramiro says:

I actually really like that idea, give nothing, but the propos from either side without any kind of actual trailer. Although, that might affect how they are displayed in the film, but it wouldn’t be the first time trailer footage was trimmed or cut entirely from finished film.

  10. Lindsay says:

I think that is a brilliant way to tease the movie! I cannot wait!

  11. To me, this trailer says, “Shit is about to get real.” Love it.
