Watch John Oliver Explain Why Turkeys Should NEVER Be Pardoned

Turkeys. I love ’em. You love ’em. And the President of the United States loves ’em! That’s why each year, since 1989, the Commander-in-chief pardons one lucky bird from the fate that awaits his feathered brethren on Thanksgiving. And since turkeys aren’t the only thing President Obama is feeling merciful towards this year (hello, America’s five million new legal immigrants!), we have more than ever to be thankful for this holiday season.

But what does America’s favorite foreign friend have to say about all this? Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is supposed to be on hiatus, but, as Oliver himself explains in the following video, he’s back. Like a psychotic ex.

“Every single turkey is guilty of having delicious bird parts that should be serving time in the prison of my mouth.” Well said, John Oliver. Well said. The wait for your return to HBO in February just became that much longer.

Of course here at Nerdist we’ve taken our own special look at this annual Pardoning of the Poultry — in a little video we like to call The Gobble Games. Far more than just a spoof of the blockbuster The Hunger Games films (the third of which, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, is now in theaters), Nerdist Presents: The Gobble Games is an unflinching examination of the physical and psychological torture these poor birds must undergo. You can watch it below. And may the odds be ever in your flavor.
