Watch David Bowie’s Creepy New Music Video for “Lazarus”

Tomorrow is David Bowie’s 69th birthday, which is great for him and we’re happy for the guy, but it’s an even better day for the music-listening public because that’s when Bowie will release his 26th album, ★ (pronounced Blackstar).

Ahead of the record, we’ve gotten two music videos. The first was for “Blackstar,” a positively dark and creepy 10-minute video with bizarre cult imagery, and today, Bowie shared the music video for “Lazarus,” which we previously saw performed by Michael C. Hall on The Late Show. This time around, Bowie is bed-bound in what appears to be some sort of disheveled hospital room with the same unsettling head-wrap bandage with button eyes that makes him look like a shaved teddy bear, but not nearly as comforting.

Bowie isn’t one to be simply a prop for the director to move around as he or she pleases, as his performance is very animated, from his writhing around in bed to his enthusiastic letter-writing. Director Johan Renck, who has also directed some episodes of Breaking Bad as well as Bowie’s video for the album’s title track, said of the clip, “One could only dream about collaborating with a mind like that; let alone twice. Intuitive, playful, mysterious and profound… I have no desire to do any more videos knowing the process never ever gets as formidable and fulfilling as this was. I’ve basically touched the sun.”

Watch the video above and let us know in the comments how much you’re looking forward to ★. Do you think it’ll be as experimental as all the hype suggests?
