Watch Caesar Grow Up In This Mash-Up Trailer APEHOOD

The mash-up trailer is one of the best reasons for the internet to exist, methinks, especially if it’s timely. At this moment, the worlds of blockbuster and independent film are buzzing about two movies in particular: Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Richard Linklater’s Boyhood. The latter is a fascinating look at raising a child actually filmed over the course of 12 years from the boy’s ages 6-18. Dawn is of course the follow-up to Rise of the Planet of the Apes which showed an ape being raised to adulthood. Interesting how much they have in common if you really think about it, which is precisely what Nelson Carvajal thought when making Apehood, a version of Caesar’s story as set to the music and pacing in the Boyhood trailer. It’s quite the thing.

Ah, that’s so great. I love how just by putting poppy indie music behind it, Carvajal was able to make some of the tensest moments in Rise and Dawn really tender. It’s a fun exercise in what editing and music can do to footage.

To see Apehood‘s trailer it compares to the original, here’s the Boyhood trailer below.

And if you’re so inclined, you can see how totally NOT the same the original trailer for Rise of the Planet of the Apes was, but still kind of in keeping with the theme of watching a child grow up and become a “man.” Ahh, shared themes.

Read my review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
