We can disagree on policy and who we wish occupied the Oval Office, but one issue that should be non-partisan is that the President’s tweets work perfectly as dialogue for some of pop culture’s most famous villains. Once again, his Twitter account proved to be a precious inspiration, this time for The Lord of the Ring‘s Andy Serkis who read this latest batch of messages as his nefarious character Gollum.
Serkis was a guest on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show, where he happily obliged the host’s request to recreate his famous (should have won an Oscar for it!) performance as the twisted ring-loving character from Peter Jackson’s trilogy.
It’s amazing to see him instantly inhabit the character–from the way he sat on his hind legs, to his facial movements and how he uses his hands, and especially how he alters the inflection of his voice–but it’s equally amazing/disturbing just how well Trump can accidentally write dialogue for Gollum.
This does make sense, because iff you think about it, Gollum was accusing the skeptical Sam of being “fake news” long before the term became popular.
The president clearly has a knack for this. Back in January, Mark Hamill read his tweets in character as the Joker, which likewise worked a little too well. Now we’re not saying that means the President is some twisted creature with warped values who can’t be trusted, nor that he’s a madman hell bent on watching the world burn for his own amusement. We’re just saying he writes really good dialogue for those types of people.
