Watch an Octopus Become Zoidberg

OK, you are going to see a few things you’ve probably never seen before. First, you are going to watch a tiny octopus, hiding in a tide-pool, attack a crab like a crocodile does with wildebeest at a watering hole. Second, you’ll see that octopus basically do a Zoidberg impression. Finally, the octopus is going to pull the crab Cthulu-stlye back into some cranny of the pool.

Ready? Alright then:

The footage above was captured by Porsche Indrisie a few days ago amid the tide pools of Yallingup, Western Australia. Though you might expect this kind of predation to happen exclusively underwater, octopuses can survive outside of water for extended periods of time, making these surprise attacks rare, but possible.

Now, I’ll admit, calling this tangled pile of claws and arms a Zoidberg is kind of a stretch. Futurama itself says the “doctor” is of the “Decapodian” species, drawing from the order Decapoda, which includes crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. But c’mon, just look at this thing. The tentacled “head,” the claws:

Can’t you just hear a “woop woop woop woop”?
