Watch an Improvised RICK AND MORTY Episode

When I watch an episode of Rick and Morty, I’m usually rapt with a mixture of body-hurting silent laughter and head-shaking wonderment about how well the sci-fi concepts of the series meld with the ridiculous absurdist elements. It’s damn near a perfect show. But what’s more exciting sometimes is when moments of pure improvisation get used and turned into scenes in the show, notably the two “Interdimensional Cable” episodes. A show that funny can have that much improv?! Well the above video shows that improvising an episode isn’t necessarily as easy as all that, but it’s still really funny.

During San Diego Comic-Con, Vulture talked to creators Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland (who also voices both Rick and Morty, of course), writer Ryan Ridley, and the voice of Summer, Spencer Grammer, and had them improvise an episode of the show. It involves Summer wanting to get into college and wanting Rick’s help, which he can’t really do because he’s busy fusing feces to Morty’s knees. Morty, by the way, is completely okay with it. Then, before too long, Summer has graduated with honors and Morty has become nothing more than a sentient eyelash about to be blown in to nothingness by an alien invader. Ah, it wouldn’t be Rick and Morty without that.

The best part of all this is that we see just how fast the minds of the writers and stars are, and it’s completely plausible that some of the most brilliant episodes the show has done probably got their start with weird riffing sessions like this. And, like, if we can get any kind of episode before the new season begins (whenever THAT is), then I’m one happy Birdperson.
