Watch an Artist Sculpt (a Spider) in the Oculus Rift

The possibilities for the Oculus Rift explode again.

Of all the gaming tech that has come along in the last few years, the Oculus Rift has me the most excited. It’s not because it has some blockbuster title or incredible graphics — the virtual reality capabilities of the Rift really are game-changing. It could be used to simulate just about any activity, even making art. And for whatever reason, that art is spiders (with only four legs).

What you’re looking at is a representation of what the digital artist using the Rift is seeing. He is using two Razer Hydra motion controllers and software called VRClay, a sculpting application in development for the system. Each controller lets the artist rotate, extrude, and subtract pieces from the digital sculpture.

This is where the Oculus Rift will really shine. There is only so much you can do with a PS4 or XBox One, even with their many peripherals. The Oculus Rift is just so much more open. You’ll eventually be able to game, wander through immersive environments, make art, and push people who think they are riding a roller coaster to see what happens.

You can watch a longer demonstration of the VRClay tech below:
