Whether they loved or hated this summer’s Suicide Squad, many fans felt more than a little cheated they weren’t given as much of Jared Leto’s Joker as they were promised in the film’s marketing campaign. While the new Suicide Squad: The Extended Cut runs 13 minutes longer and offers some previously unseen Mister J, we’ve got plenty of extra Joker in today’s Movie Morsels. Suicide Squad
Hey, did you see Suicide Squad: The Extended Cut when it hit VOD last weekend? Great. Did you see the shots in which the Joker beats someone to death with a baseball bat while Harley Quinn is strapped down to a table by a henchman? Or the scene in the club where the Joker bonds with Monster T? Maybe you saw the scene at Van Criss Laboratories in which the Joker beats a security guard to death after he survives an exploding gift basket? Er, how about the scene in which the Joker tosses a gas grenade in order to run off after Harley rejects him?
Well, if you missed all of this that’s because these are just a few of the things shot for the film that were omitted from both the theatrical cut and The Extended Cut. (Apparently, this was in an effort to make the Joker appear slightly less detestable, so that we don’t think Harley is even crazier than we already do for joyously reuniting with him at the end of the movie.) But all of this and more is featured in a new supercut of deleted Joker scenes, compiled by YouTube’s RedDawnHanger77. Check it out…
Hard Boiled
After the box office failure of 300: Rise of an Empire and Sin City: A Dame to Kill, as well as his feature-film directorial debut The Spirit, it seemed as though Hollywood had had enough of Frank Miller. Well, never count a comic book demigod out! Because Warner Bros. apparently wants Ben Wheatley and nerd heartthrob Tom Hiddleston (who paired together on last year’s High-Rise) to direct and star in an adaptation of Miller and artist Geoff Darrow’s ’90s Dark Horse action comic Hard Boiled. Darrow’s Euro comic sensibilities were put to good use by the Wachowskis on The Matrix, and Hard Boiled is one of the last great unfilmed Frank Miller titles. So fingers crossed this all works out!
Pacific Rim: Maelstrom
The apocalypse isn’t cancelled just yet. Yesterday, we showed you the first photos of actor John Boyega on the Sydney, Australia set of director Steven DeKnight’s Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. And today we have word that another new actor has joined the cast, which also includes Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, and Levi Meaden. Action star Zhang Jin is just the latest Chinese thespian signed to the film, after Jing Tian, Wesley Wong, Lily Ji, Chen Zitong, Lan Yingying, Qian Yongchen, and Xiao Yang. Since we’ve experienced an unfortunate surge of whitewashed Asian roles in several recent American films, I’m overjoyed to see this degree of representation in the follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s fan-favorite epic.
Inner Workings
Disney’s Moana is getting lots of rave reviews, but the studio’s latest animated short, which plays before Moana when it arrives in theaters this holiday weekend, is every bit as deserving of your attention. I was lucky enough to see it a a few months back, and found it to have the same kind of fun, offbeat, idiosyncratic vision that most of Disney and Pixar’s shorts are known for. But with a quirky character design one doesn’t often see outside of indie comic books. Hey, don’t just take my word for it. Settle back and enjoy this first look at Inner Workings…
Allied
Finally today, we have two new videos from Robert Zemeckis’ World War II romantic thriller Allied, starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. I’ve heard the film’s a mostly fun throwback to Hollywood classics like Casablanca, albeit with the kind of sex and violence that couldn’t be shown in the days such movies were made. In the clip below, the two stars’ characters—a pair of spies-turned-lovers—take flirtation to the next level. While the featurette that follows has Cotillard and Zemeckis’ discussing the film’s hotblooded heroes. Enjoy!
