Warner Bros. Reveals Christopher Nolan’s Next Film, DUNKIRK

Back in September, Warner Bros. set July 21, 2017, as the release date for Christopher Nolan’s next film. Now the details about the project have finally been revealed.

Nolan’s follow up to Interstellar will be Dunkirk, a World War II story based upon Operation Dynamo which took place in May and June 1940. After the Battle of France, thousands of British, French, and Belgian soldiers were surrounded by the German army at the beaches of Dunkirk, France. The Allied forces took advantage of the German military’s decision to hold back, which allowed over 300,000 troops to be evacuated in what came to be known as “the Miracle of Dunkirk.”

According to Warner Bros., the cast of Dunkirk will largely be made up of unknown actors, but Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Tom Hardy are all in talks to join the project. Presumably, Michael Caine will also have a role, because he’s been in every Nolan movie since 2005’s Batman Begins.

Nolan has reportedly been scouting locations in France with plans to begin production of Dunkirk in May 2016. Nolan is also said to be shooting the movie using a combination of 65mm film and IMAX 65mm film. Nolan wrote the screenplay for Dunkirk, and his wife, Emma Thomas, is co-producing the project with him.

The success of Nolan’s Batman trilogy has turned him into one of the few superstar directors who can open a movie on his reputation alone. Nolan’s Inception and Interstellar were both received like event movies, and both were box office blockbusters. Presumably, Dunkirk will continue Nolan’s string of hits.
