Matthew Broderick nearly destroyed the world in WarGames, a 1983 movie in which Broderick’s character gave a supercomputer the means to start a nuclear war. While that crisis was averted, the WarGames will begin again with brand new web series launching next month from MGM and Eko. This time, it’s re-imagined as an interactive game in which players can help shape the presentation of the story. But fans of the original should recognize the film’s famous tagline: “Shall we play a game?”
Jess Nurse is leading the cast of WarGames as Kelly, a member of a hacker collective who stumbles upon something appearing to be a game before its potentially harrowing consequences for the real world become clear. The first season of WarGames will consist of six episodes, as Kelly and her friends find themselves sucked into the mystery of their discovery.
Fans can’t affect the outcome or change the narrative, but viewers can decide which characters to follow by switching between their video feeds. From there, the WarGames series will use those viewer choices to personalize the way the story unfolds. We’re not sure if this reboot will have any direct links to the original film, but there will probably be some WarGames Easter eggs in there.
WarGames will premiere on March 14 on HelloEko.com, the Eko app, Vudu, and Steam.
