WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Looks Pretty Dark, You Guys

In case there wasn’t already enough blistering news and clips and things hitting our gaping maws on Thursday, Fox has also dropped a new trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes, the third installment in their incredibly successful (and pretty damn great, I have to say) Planet of the Apes reboot series. And I have to say…it looks pretty dark, you guys. Matt Reeves’ follow-up to 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes looks to be even angrier, fuller of hatred from humans, and more reason to side with damn, dirty apes. Watch the trailer above!

In the first two of these Apes movies, which star Andy Serkis as hyper-intelligent ape leader Caesar, the apes are mistreated and later attacked by humans, but at least there’s a few people who think peace is the answer. In this movie, it looks like humans just want to wipe out all apekind, with Woody Harrelson’s military leader starring as the head honcho of hate. But if that’s what is needed to give me a movie where apes routinely ride horses through snowy fields while also carrying weapons, then I’ll take all the vile humanity I can get.

Apes

It’s fairly amazing to me that these movies have turned out to be so good, considering the 2001 attempt at a Planet of the Apes reboot did not do so well. War looks to be taking the saga to its tipping point; I can’t imagine humanity will be around too much if they make more movies after this. Like all good sci-fi allegories, this one takes a look at real, present-day issues, like collusion with the enemy in the character of the large gorilla, and innocents being the true casualties of war.

This movie looks great. I can’t wait to see how it all shakes out when War for the Planet of the Apes hits theaters in July! Let me know what you think in the comments below!
