WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Trailer Looks Way Bigger and More Brutal

One of the reasons that the modern Planet of the Apes series intrigues me more than any other active blockbuster franchise is that it seems ready and willing to evolve along with its characters. In stark contrast to the heart-on-its-sleeve de facto coming-of-age story that was 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, its 2014 follow-up was a grim and gritty essay film about the thriving gun violence plague, which had escalated beyond imagination in the three years separating these films’ releases.

These additional three years since Dawn of the Planet of the Apes have seen further stark changes here in the human world, with the sort of bigotries represented by the Apes canon since the 1968 original now bubbling to the surface of the American conversation. The marriage of so many conflicts, as we see in this final trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes, is total catastrophe. Once again, the Planet of the Apes series feels right on the money.

The few minutes of footage glimpsed in this trailer shows us a tremendous upswing in brutality and chaos, unlike anything we’ve seen even from the climactic sequences in Rise and Dawn. As promised by the title of the picture, this next–and perhaps final–chapter in this generation of Planet of the Apes movies ultimates in all-out warfare. Gripping on the one hand, nauseating on the other, when you consider just how timely the themes of these movies always seem to be.

What do you think of this final trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes? Let us know.
