Want to Take a Ride in the GHOSTBUSTERS Ecto-1? Just Call a Lyft

Taking a cab isn’t exactly exciting. You pay someone to drive you around in a yellow car for a while and then it’s over. The Uber and Lyft business models are generally the same, but at least there’s some room for the unexpected. What kind of car is going to pick you up? What will the driver’s name be? Which perfume has he or she applied to their car this time? … Okay, that’s not that exciting either. But what if someone picked you up in the Ghostbusters Ecto-1? Now we’re talking.

The Ecto-1 used in the Ghostbusters reboot (out July 16) is a refurbished 1980 Cadillac hearse, a slight upgrade from the 1959 Cadillac ambulance that Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson drove around in the original. To preface the new film’s release, Sony has partnered with Lyft to offer rides in that classic Cadillac we all know and love.

On July 1 and 2, lucky passengers in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, and Washington D.C. will notice a new “Ghost Mode” option in their Lyft apps. Should they choose to ghost, said passengers will get a free lift from either an Ecto-1 replica or the actual vehicle used in the film (or, if those are all busy, a Toyota Highlander masquerading as an Ecto-1). Plus, as The Hollywood Reporter notes, riders will win a chance to attend the Ghostbusters premiere in LA.

This partnership follows a Fiat/Lucasfilm/Star Wars collaboration preceding The Force Awakens. As some LA resident might remember, Dodge muscle cars toured the streets of the city dressed like the First Order of Stormtroopers before its release. These partnerships are paving the way for a whole new line of vehicular creativity. When can I ride around in the Batmobile? Or Herbie? Or K.I.T.T.? I don’t want to have to wait for then next incarnation of Knight Rider to do that. Anybody out there want to jump on this idea? While you’re thinking, let us know what kind of famous car you’d love to ride in.
