Volkswagen, the “People’s Automobile,†known for their iconic VW love bug and Back to the Future Libyan bus, has had its ups and downs recently, but one thing remains strong: its sausages.
Relatively unknown to people outside of Germany, Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg factory has been churning out currywurst pork sausage for 43 years. Don’t worry if this info wasn’t on your radar; they’ve made a video to explain their biggest money maker. The video definitely isn’t for vegans or the faint of heart. Let’s just say it starts with the tale of happy little pigs meeting a butcher.
The video states that 6.5 million sausages are produced at the factory every year, that updated number is closer to 7.2 million. No wonder the pigs are nowhere to be found.
The currywurst sausages are all stamped with a brand that says, “Volkswagen Originalteil†or “Volkswagen original parts†in German. Such a standard of everyday life, when you buy a Volkswagen in Germany, instead of flowers you get a gift of sausages to go along with your purchase.
These award-wieners come in two sizes – 12.5 cm and 25 cm – and come with its own spiced curry ketchup. The video says the currywurst make for good breakfast as well as a substitution for cake at birthday parties. Let’s pretend that’s a German joke, because no one should ever replace cake. Ever.
Although we haven’t seen them stateside, the sausages are sold in 11 countries as well as the stadium of the Wolfsburg soccer team. These meaty treats are so popular, the automaker is now producing more currywursts than Volkswagen cars.
Recently, to expand on their sausage domination, Volkswagen developed a vegetarian currywurst option. Still, those pigs (or “schwein”) should watch their backs.
