Visit Lovely Saturn

Wow. NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day is always good, but this one… it’s a series of photographs taken by the Cassini spacecraft as it approached Saturn. It is not CGI. It’s real. But it looks… well, YOU take a look:

5.6k Saturn Cassini Photographic Animation from stephen v2 on Vimeo.

This is part of a larger production, an IMAX movie called “Outside In.” They took the photos from Cassini, ran them through some digital tweaking and cropping, and made this animation from the pictures. It’ll leave you wanting more.

    Wait, it flew THROUGH the rings? Wouldn’t that be really dangerous?

  3. Swhitmore says:

    @ Jesper- i think she meant like a raw photo taken from Cassini while it was in the rings.. so wed have something to compare what the images actually came back like with what they enhanced…

    @Melissa:

    What would they use to take the picture of Cassini? Another spacecraft? Don’t mean to be an as but that seems kinda expensive just to take a picture of the recording. But hey it would be good for “behind the scenes” 😉

  5. Swhitmore says:

    is it me or on the last fly though… if you look at it quick…one of the moons totally looks like the death star… (~1:31 mark)..either that or god bumped his/her boob into it passing by.. lol

  6. Melissa says:

    But it looks like CGI…. I wish they had included some photos when Cassini was inside the rings.

    Neat video. But kind of ominous to have ‘Adagio for Strings’ from ‘Platoon’ playing.
