VIKINGS Renewed for Season 5 and Casts Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Hail Ragnar! History Channel’s scripted drama Vikings—currently on episode 5 of its fourth season—just got renewed for an additional 20 episode season with some casting news included. Jonathan Rhys Myers, the former King Henry VIII from the Showtime hit drama The Tudors, will be added to the cast line-up next year as an undisclosed major character! Let the speculation begin! We’re sure he’ll have some screen time with King Ragnar at least. (And here’s hoping they’ll use his natural Irish accent and charm for his upcoming character!)

History Channel president Jana Bennett mentioned via press release how, “the brilliant writing and depth of historical research and authenticity brought to the screen by Michael Hirst paired with our talented cast and crew, has made this series one of the most compelling, visually stunning historical dramas on television.” Not to mention there’s the upcoming comic series and the cast and crew’s frequent Comic Con appearances!

Vikings has been able to produce a steady stream of loyal fans from across the globe, and the production quality has continuously evolved with each season. Bennett added that, “Vikings has raided the hearts of audiences and we are thrilled that Jonathan Rhys Meyers will become a bigger part of the History family.” Meyers is also part of History’s reboot of the historical series Roots. This will be the Irish actor’s second time working with Tudor writer/creator Michael Hirst. Season five will air in 2017.
