Video Premiere: Mega Ran Drops Visuals for ‘Venting’

Raheem Jarbo a/k/a Random a/k/a Mega Ran a/k/a one of our favorite dudes has returned with a new Mike Petrow-directed video for his cathartic, aptly titled track “Venting.” This is not another brightly inflected chiptune song from Ran, rather this is an impressive litany of issues from a disaffected former teacher who has sharp insights about his own life and the trajectory of hip hop. Over an El Huervo (Hotline Miami) beat that evokes the J-Dilla-Madlib collaboration Jaylib, Ran goes off about various topics that irk him: “Dudes brag about about their riches then asking me for free beats” and “schools who give hard working teachers paycuts.” All the while we see his stern visage superimposed over various scenes he is describing. He is not messing arounf.

However, the rapper admits that he is not generally a pessimist: “truthfully I’m Mega Ran and I don’t hate much.” You can tell the things that bother him are things he absolutely needed to get off his chest in “Venting.” And once he’s done that? Back to an optimistic disposition as the video ends with Ran lip syncing along to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” lest you forget his goodnatured sense of humor.

If you are as captivated as we are by Mega Ran’s new video for “Venting,” be sure to check out the rest of his new EP, A Gamers Anthem, for which he collaborated with Detroit group The Regiment. Also be sure to check in on his Kickstarter campaign to fund vinyl and NES cartridge releases of his upcoming 2015 album as well as his documentary.
