Video Adds a Laugh Track to Make THE MARTIAN Actually a Comedy

The Martian was 2015’s best comedy or musical…at least according to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Earlier this month at the Golden Globes, the film somehow came out on top of the other contending films including The Big Short, Joy, Spy, and Trainwreck.

Many industry observers noted that The Martian was seemingly nominated in this category in order to give it an easier chance at taking home an award. It’s not as if The Martian doesn’t deserve accolades — it’s on the Oscar short list for this year’s Best Picture. The Martian just wasn’t actually a comedy…until now.

Paying for Movies’ Dan Summerhayes has put together a short video called “The Martian is the Best Comedy of 2015.” Thanks to the power of editing and a relentless laugh track, The Martian finally becomes the comedy that the Golden Globes told you it was.

Some of the clips aren’t entirely successful, as the laugh track is sometimes more of a distraction than a humorous tool. But the video gradually gets funnier as inappropriate laughter is added to the misfortune of Matt Damon’s stranded astronaut, Mark Watney. The montage set to “Yakety Sax” is the best part. The dramatic rescue of Watney also takes on an amusing slapstick tone with the laugh track. The video even adds a bleaker ending to the film, which was pretty funny considering.
