VFX Reel for MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Also a Testament to Its Practical Effects

Lately we’ve been bringing you VFX reels from big budget films such as Jurassic World, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and The Martian, and even from television shows like Agent Carter, all in attempt to show you how the Hollywood special effects sausage gets made out of leftover computer parts and pig lips.

Wait…no…I think I mixed that up with actual sausage. [Editor’s Note: No, that’s how movie effects are made.]

Anyway, with the Academy Awards just around the corner and Mad Max: Fury Road up for best picture and best director (of which, in my very humble but completely correct opinion, it should win both), we thought this was a perfect opportunity to bring you the VFX reel from George Miller‘s masterpiece.

This video comes from Brave New World VFX, and in it we get to see how something as simple as putting Tom Hardy‘s head onto a stunt doubles body is done, to much more complicated effects like…uh…um, actually, most of the truly crazy things here are practical effects, where real cars really race, crash, and flip. Though there is some green screen work for scenes inside the cars.

A lot of work seems to have been dedicated to just making sure the desert look of Fury Road had the right color palette.

None of this is a knock on the visual effects artists either. It’s hard to spot what isn’t real in the movie because the effects are so seamless; it’s just a compliment to the unprecedented work that went into making this movie.

Which one of the effects shown here surprised you the most? We want to witness your answers at the gates of our comments section below.
