New Details on How VENOM Sets Up Sony’s Spider-Verse!

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man may live firmly in the MCU, but that hasn’t stopped Sony’s dreams of creating a Marvel Universe of their own. Sony reportedly has control of 900 Marvel characters that are tangentially related to Spidey, but that doesn’t mean all of them can headline their own movies. If all goes well, the Venom film will lead to more Sony Marvel movies. Today’s Nerdist News is examining which heroes will get their chance to shine after Venom hits theaters.

Join host and alien symbiote, Jessica Chobot, as she runs down a recent report out of Sony that expands upon “Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.” That’s what Sony is calling it internally, although we have our doubts that SUMC or even SUMAC will catch on as a title. There’s a lot riding on Venom‘s success, which appears to be why Sony is backing away from an R-rating and emphasizing humor over horror.

Will that be enough to draw in the MCU fans and make Venom a blockbuster? It’s too soon to call, but Sony has determined that Silk, Jackpot, and Nightwatch have the potential to join Jared Leto’s Morbius the Living Vampire as the next heroes to follow Venom. However, Silver and Black, the previously reported Silver Sable and Black Cat movie, is not going forward. Instead, Black Cat and Silver Sable are likely to get their own films.

Of course, Sony doesn’t have to look at Dark Universe to realize the risk of rushing a shared universe into existence. One of the reasons the Amazing Spider-Man reboot failed is that the second movie seemed to be more interested in setting up a Sinister Six film than telling a good story. This may be why the report indicated that Sony is open to lending out more characters to the MCU, in exchange for a few guest appearances from Marvel’s side of the universe. That could be beneficial to both sides, if it comes to pass.

How do you feel about Sony’s plans for SUMC? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
