“Hey baby, wanna… kill all humans?” No? Well, the robots in this comedy short film sure do.

Ben Hansford, a promo-commercial writer/director, has robots on the brain. According to his brief bio, Hansford “grew up loving robots; [including] Gundam, Robotech, K-9 from Doctor Who, Transformers, every iteration of the Terminator (including the T-X), Go Bots, Johnny Five, Box, Mechwarrior, [and] Patlabor…” But obsessing over robots isn’t enough for the award-winning USC film school grad; he also needs to make movies about them. In this case, a short film entitled Uprising – A Post-Apocalyptic Robot Comedy, which is about—you guessed it—a robot uprising. But his project (the NSFW pitch video for which can be found above) is a bit short on cash, and needs fan backers to… rise up, and support his effort.

Uprising slots into that niche (although hopefully expanding) category of robo-action comedy, although Hansford says that the real heart (motherboard?) of the story is about family. Hansford’s kickstarter page states that “most of the concept came to [him] when [his] son was an infant…Two of the robots—[the] film’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern—save a human baby and decide to raise it as their own. (Hint: Worst. Parents. Ever.)” Hansford also says that “on top of that there’s life-sucking Roombas, self-driving Priuses that hunt humans in packs, vigilante Soda Machines, and Celphones [sic] that send your Snapchats to your Mom.” And while all of that sounds pretty scary and hilarious, the wrong Snapchats sent to one’s mother… now that belongs in a horror flick.

Hansford, who’s taking on “all of the development, production, post, and visual effects on a shoe-string budget,” is seeking $36,000 to complete the film. Rewards for backing the project include posters, T-shirts, and art books, as well as Producer/EP titles and cameos for the higher tier donors. Although, one may hope that there’d be some kind of super-tier for backers who want to be spared from the robot apocalypse all together. Although even dying at the hands of our future machine overlords still doesn’t sound as bad as sending the wrong Snapchats to one’s mom.
