Unity Support Coming to New 3DS

It didn’t take very long for Nintendo to use the extra power on their newest handheld iteration, did it? It was announced at the Unite 2015 Tokyo event that Unity will be supported on the New 3DS and New 3DS XL. Unity is a useful game engine used by a multitude of game developers to create all sorts of 2D and 3D worlds that are easier to port onto different platforms. The Wii U has already seen a bump in its indie titles because of the Unity support, and even if they weren’t all home runs, more games should never be frowned upon.

Despite some questionable moves by the mega Japenese company, bringing Unity support to their currently most successful console is a smart move. It should give plenty of developers a reason to give the handheld a second look–especially for indie developers that want their titles to be on as many platforms as possible.

If that’s not enough to excite, this will also allow developers to use the different tools on the 3DS, such as the gyroscope and the 3D effect. Other possibilities could include cross-buy titles between Nintendo’s home console and portable as well. The Big N hasn’t had a huge initiative with cross-buy games but they have experimented with the concept a few times with the likes of Mario Vs. Donkey Kong and OlliOlli being some recent examples. So, being able to release a game on both consoles at the same time could make this concept more attractive. Even if cross-buy doesn’t become a norm, at least there should be a large bump in games on the portable. Clearly some developers and publishers have chosen to avoid the Wii U like the plague, but the possibility of making an impression on the uber popular handheld will probably be too tantalizing for some companies to skip.

Nintendo has surely been making a lot of moves recently with their move to mobile gaming and such. What do you think of all this? Smart, backwards, forward-thinking, or all of the above? Do your best Yoshi impression and hatch your ideas in the comments section below.
