UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT Duo Tina Fey and Tituss Burgess Trade Insults in Song

The MCC Theater in New York has an annual tradition, as part of its “Miscast” benefit gala, to let famous actors sing musical numbers associated with roles they would not normally expect to be cast in. This year, the highlight was Cy Coleman and David Zippel’s “You’re Nothing Without Me,” as performed by Tina Fey and Tituss Burgess. The song, from the musical City of Angels, is already about a fictional character upset with his own writer. But the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and 30 Rock team have tweaked the lyrics to make them a bit more specific, including jabs at Burgess’ new brand of wine, and Fey’s age (not that she remotely looks it).

I’d say Fey has a slight edge in this sing-off; she’s better able to camouflage the word repetitions, while Burgess rhymes “record” and “fiction” with themselves. But after all, you’d expect the writer to be better with words, and the Broadway-trained actor to boast a more seasoned singing voice. You’d be right on both counts.

This bodes pretty well for that Mean Girls musical Fey may have mentioned a time or two. Maybe Burgess could take on Tim Meadows’ role as the principal. Since [SPOILER!] he and Fey do hug and make up at the end of the song, we have to imagine more collaborations might be in the offing.

Would you want to see Tina Fey do more musical theater? Can we persuade her to do a Sarah Palin singin’ biography onstage? You bet’cha can express your opinion on this topic in comments below.
