Netflix has been inundating fans with huge anime announcements this week, from Neon Genesis Evangelion joining the roster to the live action Cowboy Bebop adaptation. One of the upcoming projects we’ve been most excited about is the brand new Ultraman series from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex‘s Kenji Kamiyama. The show will debut in April 2019 and you can check out the brilliant trailer below.
This series is animated reimagining of the classic ’60s Tokusatsu show of the same name. The original show focused on the Science Patrol, an anti-monster defense agency established to combat terrifying extraterrestrial threats. After the agency is all but demolished, one of the remaining members, Shin Hayata, becomes the giant alien Ultraman in order to protect the Earth.
Netflix’s official description reveals this anime will be a direct sequel to the cult live-action show: âSeveral years have passed since the events of Ultraman, with the legendary âGiant of Lightâ now a memory, as it is believed he returned home after fighting the many giant aliens that invaded the Earth. Shin Hayataâs son Shinjiro seems to possess a strange ability, and it is this ability, along with his fatherâs revelation that he was Ultraman, that leads Shinjiro to battle the new aliens invading the Earth as the new Ultraman.â
