Almost anyone can create a simple paper airplane. Some can make more complex paper airplanes that may require origami skills. But the ultimate paper airplane can’t be made by folding paper. For the last decade, a man named Luca Iaconi-Stewart has been painstakingly building a Boeing 777 airplane out of paper folders with only glue and X-Acto knives as his construction tools.
As you can see in the video below, the results speak for themselves.
Wired recently profiled Iaconi-Stewart, and he shared some of the history behind his passion project. According to Iaconi-Stewart, it began as something intended for school and simply kept expanding as he added more and more details. Although he admitted that he has occasionally stepped aside from this build, he always comes back to it because he finds the construction process to be a serene experience.
Even after so many years, the plane is still unfinished. Iaconi-Stewart is working on the wings with an eye towards making them functional. The video makes a pretty convincing argument that he will eventually pull that off, as he demonstrated the retractable landing gear and wheels that really work. Additionally, the cabin opens to reveal the interior of the plane. About the only thing that Iaconi-Stewart hasn’t added inside are luggage bins that open and close.
By his own estimation, Iaconi-Stewart is still at least a few years away from completing his masterpiece. But you can follow his progress here, and see even more pics of creation.
