Two Nerds Argue the Merits of GAME OF THRONES and LORD OF THE RINGS

There are two types of people in this world: those who like J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and subsequent Peter Jackson film adaptations, and those who like George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series and the subsequent HBO series Game of Thrones. That’s not actually true at all; I, for one, like both of them equally, but there are certainly people who come down hard on one side or the other.

Despite the fact that both of their creators have the middle initials Rail Road, and both series have a character named Sam who is a jolly, loyal friend and ally of one of the main heroes, both of whom spend most of their time on or around a large mountain, LOTR and GOT are very different and approach the high fantasy genre from completely different angles and tones. LOTR is a straightforward quest myth while GOT is, essentially, about the politics of different families. Oh, and yes, one has boobs and the other doesn’t. There, are you happy?

This great debate was once again held by the YouTube channel Field Day, which pit two nerds against each other to argue about which fantasy franchise was better. This debate is given visual aid by the good folks at Kurz Gesagt, who animate different explanations of things, from the Fermi Paradox to the history of time. Their animated versions of Sean Bean in each franchise are pretty enjoyably different, and the digital blur around the more salacious Westerosi moments made me laugh.

Which fantasy realm gets your vote? Are you a Ringer or a Throner? Tell me in the comments which you are, and then tell all your friends that I came up with those terms, because I did and I’m proud of myself.
