David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult classic TV series Twin Peaks is known for many things — its quirky characters, its spooky atmosphere, and its obsession with certain food items, like donuts and cherry pie. But maybe more than any of those other things, Twin Peaks is fondly remembered for its incredible soundtrack from composer (and longtime Lynch collaborator) Angelo Badalamenti.
Badalementi’s score was ethereal and spooky, as well as highly dramatic and sad. But it could just as easily be a jaunty jazz tune, evoking the 1950s cop dramas of Lynch’s youth. Now, almost exactly 26 years since its original release back in 1990, the Twin Peaks original score is getting a long awaited vinyl release from Death Waltz Recording. The re-release will hit digital stores on August 10 at 12 PM (CST) via Mondotees, and retail stores worldwide on September 9, and will cost $23.
The new re-issue Twin Peaks – Original Score LP will come pressed on 180 Gram ‘Damn Fine Coffee’ colored vinyl. The folks at Death Waltz Recording went back to the Warner archives, where engineer Tal Miller cut brand new vinyl masters. Dave Cheppa at Plush Vinyl was able to cut new lacquers, and finally Rainbo was able to press the record on 180g vinyl for the best possible sound quality.
According to the press release, “the record comes housed inside a 425gsm gatefold sleeve featuring lyrics and liner notes by Badalamenti, as well as a cover image by Sam Smith, which comes approved by David Lynch himself. The gatefold sleeve is then housed within a bespoke die cut outer jacket designed by Jay Shaw featuring super subtle white spot varnish text. The whole affair is finished with a top loading obi strip & pressed on âDamn Fine Coffee’ colored vinyl.” You can see high quality images of the soundtrack re-release in our gallery below.
In a statement, Angelo Badalamenti said âI’m glad that after 25 years, Death Waltz Recording Company has re-released the original soundtrack for Twin Peaks for a new audience to enjoy. This is my defining work as a composer and Iâm happy it will get a fresh listen.”
The music of Twin Peaks got two further albums back in the day–there was the soundtrack to the feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and a few years back season two finally got its own soundtrack release as well. Hopefully if this sells well, those will get vinyl reissues down the line as well.
