TWIN PEAKS’ Jack Nance Inspired Dumb Numbers’ New Single, ‘I Dreamed I Saw Jack Nance Last Night’

She’s dead….wrapped in plastic.

Those were among the first words ever uttered in the pilot episode of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult classic television series Twin Peaks, by the character of local saw mill foreman and fisherman Pete Martell, played by actor Jack Nance, and they remain among the most iconic (and most quoted) lines from the entire series. Although he didn’t play a huge part in the show’s overall narrative, Pete, much like the Log Lady (played by the late Catherine Coulson, who was actually Nance’s ex-wife) was a huge part of the quirky local charm of the town, and therefore a hugely memorable part of the show for fans.

Nance and Twin Peaks director and co-creator David Lynch actually go way back together, as he was the star of his feature film debut Eraserhead, and was also in almost every single one of Lynch’s films after that, until the time of his death (under somewhat mysterious circumstances) in 1996.

Now the band Dumb Numbers, led by musician Adam Harding, has paid homage to Twin Peaks, and Nance in particular, with their newest single, “I Dreamed I Saw Jack Nance Last Night.”The new song is filled with references to Twin Peaks, like bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg doing a riff on the bass line from Angelo Badalamenti’s theme song, and Harding’s guitar solo, which was recorded the same way the Little Man spoke in the Black Lodge (first backwards, recorded, then reversed.)

‘I Dreamed I Saw Jack Nance Last Night’ is the lead single from Dumb Number’s new box set of three split 10-inch records, with a portion of all proceeds going to The David Lynch Foundation For Consciousness-Based Education And World Peace. Put out by Joyful Noise, the records feature new music from Dumb Numbers, as well as songs from ex-The Jesus Lizard frontman David Yow, the Melvins, and even David Lynch himself. The box set is available for pre-order at Joyful Noise’s webstore, and will be released on Halloween.
