TV-Cap: WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER: FIRST DAY OF CAMP Trailer, THE WALKING DEAD Season 6 Photos, & More

Some of you are enjoying the beginning of a three day weekend, but before you get too deep into your festivities, take a break — a break before your break. Keep scrolling and catch up on the latest TV happenings: watch the first trailer for Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, see photos from the next season of The Walking Dead, learn about a new cast member on Empire, and more.

Up in Arms. AMC is very careful about the photos they release to promote The Walking Dead — they never give away spoilers. Three new images posted by Entertainment Weekly from Season 6 are in that vein. They feature Daryl (Norman Reedus), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), and Glenn (Steven Yeun), and it’s not shocking at all, but they’re armed, and Glenn is firing. [Comic Book Resources]

Finally! After a distinct lack of female writers and directors, the modern era of Doctor Who is making some forward steps. Rachel Talalay directed the Series 8 finale last fall, and she’ll be back for Series 9. Hettie MacDonald will be directing next season too, and we get female writers. They’re the first women writing for the show since Series 4. Yeah. Catherine Tregenna and Sarah Dollard will both pen episodes. [Nerdist]

Dollar Bills Everywhere. Fox’s Empire is raking in quite the list of impressive guest stars. They have names like Lenny Kravitz and Chris Rock lined up for Season 2 and also Marisa Tomei. She will play Mimi Whiteman, who according to Deadline, is “a demanding venture capitalist who becomes involved in Lyon family drama. A Forbes list billionairess, Mimi is a lover of hip hop music, social trends, high-end fashion and beautiful women.” Tomei will appear in multiple episodes. [Vulture]

Going Old School. Stephen Colbert seems like a guy who likes to do the unexpected, and he definitely took all of us by surprise by taking over as host of a public access program in Monroe, Michigan. As if taking control of Only in Monroe for the day wasn’t enough of a twist, Colbert used the opportunity to interview Eminem. [Nerdist]

Picture Perfect. Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Fox comedy/horror anthology series has basically all the characters. Lea Michele, Nick Jonas, and Jamie Lee Curtis are just a few of the names slated to appear on the show, and Fox has released a slew of cast photos showing off them and others — they have plenty of victims to kill off. Scream Queens will premiere on September 22. See more pics of the cast at Give Me My Remote.

Vixen Voice. CW Seed’s animated series Vixen has found its leading lady according to Vixen Varsity, and she’ll be voiced by Megalyn Echikunwoke (Damien). The series takes place in the same universe as The CW’s Arrow and The Flash, and actors from those series will join Echikunwoke in the six-part series. I’m pretty darn excited about this. Undead Aboard. The mere idea of mixing zombies and a cruise ship makes me nervous, but the potential for things to go terribly wrong didn’t stop Walker Stalker Conventions from creating The Walker Stalker Cruise. Yes, it’s a floating convention dedicated to The Walking Dead. There will be panels, games, and special guests such as Norman Reedus and Emily Kinney. The not-undead cruise will set sail next January and go from Miami to Nassau. [Nerdist]

Moving Out. If you’ve watched Sesame Street at any point since 1971, you know Sonia Manzano. She’s played Maria, the co-owner of the Fix-It Shop, for over 40 years. Manzano also wrote on the series. But all good things end, and after a long and successful run, Manzano is retiring. The neighborhood is a little less cheery. Manzano’s memoir, Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx, will be on shelves on August 25. [Deadline]

A LEGO Time Ago. A new chapter in the Star Wars saga will debut on Monday, July 6. It’s not quite on The Force Awakens level, but LEGO Star Wars: Droid Tales looks like it will offer its own kind of fun. The animated series from Disney XD retells the saga from C-3PO and R2-D2’s perspective, and given the kind of humor we’ve seen in previous LEGO Star Wars specials, it will probably be a slightly sillier story than we’re used to. Check out a couple more images from the animated series at Comic Book Resources.

This Is Beautiful. Summer just got so much better. The first trailer for Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp is here, and it is spectacular — ridiculous, too, but in the best of ways. Words don’t do this prequel story justice so please watch the trailer over and over again. [Nerdist]
