TV-Cap: THE LAST KINGDOM Trailer, Tracy Morgan to Host SNL, & More

From the shores of England to Star City, today’s TV-Cap has a little bit of everything. Variety is the spice of life, etc., and television offers plenty of it. Comic book adaptations, thrillers, science, comedy, period dramas—we’ve got it all. Keep scrolling to watch the full trailer for The Last Kingdom, to see the Impala from Season 1 of Supernatural, to learn about Tracy Morgan’s return to Saturday Night Live, and more.

Anti-Heathens. BBC America is embracing the period drama genre with their upcoming series The Last Kingdom. The series focuses on the birth of England and the journey of an outcast who wants to recapture his ancestral lands. As you can see in the above trailer, it looks intense–there’s plenty of fighting, yelling, and action. And lots of fur. Oh, and Rutger Hauer. The show will premiere on October 10.

The Pres. So many shows from the ’90s are making comebacks that it’s legitimately difficult to keep track of all of them without a reference document. One of the returning sitcoms is Coach. In case you missed it, ABC is bringing Coach back as a 13-episode series penned by the original series creator Barry Kemp. The revival is set 18 years after the end of the original series. And Malcolm Barrett (Better Off Ted) has just been cast as Waddell, a series regular role. He’ll be playing the president of the university where Fox’s son is a head coach. [Deadline]

Secrets and Lies. I associate Jerry Bruckheimer with big set pieces and bold action (sometimes over the top action), but films with those features aren’t all he has in his playbook. One of his current projects is a television drama titled Home. It was at Fox, but it’s found a new home at TNT–the network has ordered a pilot. The show focuses on what happens to a “perfect” family when secrets are uncovered and threaten to rip them apart. [Variety]

A Triumphant Return. Tracy Morgan can’t be kept down. The comedian and actor has been out of the spotlight since he was involved in a serious accident last summer, but he’s taking his first step back towards performing on October 17. Morgan will be returning to Saturday Night Live as guest host. I look forward to seeing him back on that stage. [Nerdist]

Rising Star. The home of Oliver Queen on The CW’s Arrow is undergoing a name change. At Comic-Con, Stephen Amell mentioned that Starling City would actually be known as Star City in Season 4–it’s what Arrow’s home is called in comics. As proof of that change, Paul Blackthorne (Quentin Lance) posted a photo on Instagram showing his character’s Star City Metro Police badge. [Comic Book Resources]

Rusty Baby. Supernatural has 10 seasons under its belt, and in that time, Dean Winchester’s precious Impala has been through the ringer. I can’t imagine how many miles she’s traveled and how often Dean has had to perform magic to put her back together. In real life, fixing the Impala means having multiple versions on set for the Winchesters to use and abuse, and the car was exceptionally abused when it was hit by a truck in the Season 1 finale. Jensen Ackles recently stumbled across the wrecked car from way back when while they were filming and shared photos on Facebook. Ten years hasn’t been kind to Dean’s baby. [Nerdist]

A Score. Universal’s Straight Outta Compton made a splash at the box office on opening weekend, garnering $60.2 million. The numbers apparently caught the attention of FX Network, as they’ve forked over money for the exclusive US commercial TV premiere rights. [Variety]

Beautifully Explosive. The Mythbusters have made firing a gun look artful, because of course they have. Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman used a fancy Phantom v2010 camera (it can record at 12 gigapixels per second) to capture a bullet leaving a gun at 73,000 frames per second. Yes, it is crazy, and yet, surprisingly lovely. [Nerdist]
