TV-Cap: Steven Moffat Leaves DOCTOR WHO and More

We’re easing into the week, but there are so many tidbits to cover on the television front that we can only ease a little. Dive headfirst into today’s TV-Cap to learn about who is replacing Steven Moffat as showrunner on Doctor Who, to keep your dream of a Veronica Mars reboot alive, to see Game of Thrones season six teasers, and so much more.

Getting Schooled. If you’ve ever dreamed of casting spells or wielding a wand, you’re probably ready and willing to jump into the world of Syfy’s The Magicians. It’s based on the book series by Lev Grossman and takes place at Brakebills University. Our own Alicia Lutes visited the set; read her report. The Magicians premieres on January 25.

Putting Masks Aside. This is only loosely related to television, but I hope you’ll forgive me the indulgence. Arrow’s Stephen Amell and John Barrowman appeared at New Jersey’s Heroes & Villains Fan Fest, and they took advantage of having a pianist on site to deliver a stellar duet. They chose the “Music of the Night” from The Phantom of the Opera, and guys, they do a rather impressive job. It’s just what your Monday needs. Bless Amell for recording the event on Facebook. Could It Be? DC Comics has kept their movie and television enterprises in their own sandboxes, but could crossovers still happen? Maybe? Kevin Smith mentioned what could be a clue during his Fatman on Batman podcast. He was discussing a cut part of a special he did with Geoff Johns and said, “I don’t know how much I’m supposed to say because they cut it out. But the idea of, ‘Hey man, DC is known for nothing if not a multiverse,’ so at which point I was like [to Geoff Johns], ‘Could they [****]ing crossover?’ And he was like, ‘Ahh…’ So doors are being left open and stuff like that.” I hope that’s the case! Possess This. Fox is bringing The Exorcist to television. They’ve handed over a pilot order for a modern take on the book by William Blatty. It would emphasize the psychological thriller aspect of the demonic possession and how it affects the people involved. [Nerdist]

The crew of LEGENDS OF TOMORROW are trying a little too hard to make me feel like I’m at home. Slow clap. Thanks guys.

Welcoming Not Exterminating. You can draw more than a few comparisons between Legends of Tomorrow and Doctor Who, and you’re probably more likely to do so because of the presence of Arthur Darvill. The Legends crew recently tried to make the Time Master feel more at home by presenting him with an improvised Dalek. Awww. [Comic Book Resources]

Crunching Possibilities. The Calculator is set to appear on Arrow. Played by Tom Amandes, he’ll make his first appearance on February 3, and he’ll have ties to someone we know and love. Series executive producer Wendy Mericle told Entertainment Weekly, “He does have a connection to Felicity.” Could he be her father or maybe a mentor? [Nerdist]

Loose Your Enthusiasm. Saturday Night Live is bringing Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David in to host the show on February 6. Don’t feel like you have to keep your excitement contained. [TVLine]

Say It with GIFs. I love television, and I love GIFs so I have a new weekly column to document the best of both worlds every week. The first round-up includes Supernatural, Supergirl, and other shows that don’t start with “Super.” Go check it out. [IMAGE: The CW, Oh My Supernatural]

Goodbye, TARDIS. It’s been a long run, but Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat is departing the series in 2017. He’ll be replaced by Chris Chibnall. Moffat’s final 12 episodes, which will be season ten, will air in spring 2017. This means quite a long break until more new Who. Read Moffat’s comments about leaving right this way.

Tweet Teases. HBO comes up with plenty of clever marketing tactics for Game of Thrones. They’ve leveraged social media over the years, and on Friday, they did it again. They shared season six teasers with anyone who tweeted support for various houses using hashtags. You can see the one for House Targaryen (a.k.a. the best house) above. View even more House teases at Nerdist.

Never Let Go. Fellow Marshmallows, don’t give up on your dreams of more Veronica Mars. Kristen Bell recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and said her and Rob Thomas are always up for working together again. She said, “We’ve ping-ponged other ideas but it always comes back to Veronica Mars because it’s so special to the both of us and in truth, because it’s so beloved by fans.” She continued, “The whole reason to create something is so people will love it and we have the best fans on the planet so we’re definitely still looking for the window where we could allow Veronica to exist again, whether it’s a miniseries or a short-run cable series.” I’m keeping everything crossed. What are your thoughts about Chibnall taking over Doctor Who? How about more Veronica Mars? Talk to me in the comments.
