It’s been practically forever since Season 8 of Doctor Who came to an end. Whenever I’m frustrated with waiting for new episodes of shows I like, I think of the Eleventh Doctor’s quote, “Is this how time normally passes? Really slowly… in the right order?” Except, time often goes faster than I expect and Season 9 of Doctor Who debuts in just over a month. Spectacular Times. Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor and Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald seem to be presenting a united front for Season 9 of Doctor Who. The newest trailer for the upcoming season shows them supporting each other and also there are dragons, Zygons, and all sorts of aliens. Oh! And Missy and Maisie Williams’s mystery guest role. A Conspiracy. If you haven’t paid much attention to Syfy in the past couple of years, you should know they’re making a concentrated effort in the department of actual sci-fi. They’ve just announced the date for one of their upcoming endeavors, a “space thriller” called The Expanse. The series is based on the book series of the same name by James S.A. Corey, and it will have a two night premiere on Monday, December 14, and Tuesday, December 15–it airs at 10:00pm ET/PT both nights. [Give Me My Remote]
Back to the Savannah. Disney’s been revisiting the past by turning films from their animated library into live-action pieces, but they’re also mining gems for television. For example: They’re going back to Africa for a primetime movie about Simba’s son Kion. The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar will air on the Disney Channel in November, and Disney is planning to launch a TV series based on Lion Guard characters in early 2016. The Lion King has already spawned an animated series, direct-to-video sequels, and a Broadway play—it’s the gift that keeps giving. That’s the real circle of life. [Variety]
Don’t Give Up. Remember how Steven Spielberg was producing a live action Halo TV series for Showtime? There’s the briefest of updates on it. Showtime president David Nevins confirmed to IGN that Halo is “still in very active development.” Nevins said no further details will be available any time soon. [Comic Book Resources]
It Never Ends. Some franchises offer endless inspiration–like Friday the 13th. There have been thirteen movies featuring Jason Voorhees, but he can’t be stopped. He’s moving to The CW, also known as the home of all the genre series forever. A Friday the 13th series is in development with Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle writing the pilot. If the series gets picked up, I hope there’s a crossover with Supernatural. [Nerdist]
CW’s Plans. Though it seems like we’re constantly talking about shows airing on The CW, the network only programs ten hours of series a week. It doesn’t seem like it’s possible to fit everything in–especially with all the midseason shows ahead–but CW’s president Mark Pedowitz said they have it figured out. They’ll possibly use midseason breaks to open the schedule up for series like The 100, Containment, and Legends of Tomorrow. Pedowitz also touched on how many episodes the midseason shows will have: Containment gets 13 episodes, The 100 has 16, and Legends of Tomorrow‘s episode count is still to be determined. [IGN]
It’s Baaack. Get ready to lift a glass, Rick and Morty fans! The Adult Swim series from Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland has been renewed for a third season. Huzzah! And coincidentally enough, it was just featured on The Dan Cave as one of the best returning fall TV shows. Constantine in Action. It was announced this week that Matt Ryan would reprise his role as John Constantine in a one time only appearance on Arrow. And now, we know Constantine will be tied into the fallout of resurrecting Sara Lance in Ra’s al Ghul’s Lazarus Pit. Guggenheim said Lance will be brought back to life on Arrow before moving to Legends of Tomorrow and said, “Unlike Thea [Queen], who wasn’t fully dead [before being resurrected by the Lazarus Pit], the consequences of using the pit on someone as dead as Sara was creates some unforeseen difficulties…and John Constantine is uniquely suited to help our team deal with those.” No one is more perfect for the job. It’s Electric. Supergirl is going to keep busy fighting villain after villain in Season 1 of the CBS series, and the latest addition to the roster is Livewire. Brit Morgan (True Blood) has been cast in the role of Livewire/Leslie Willis. The character is a shock-jock who works for the same company as Kara and suffers an accident that makes her dangerous–which sounds similar to what happened to Willis in the comics. [Variety]
