TV-Cap: Mulder and Scully’s Relationship Status in New X-FILES, X-MEN on TV, & More

Though we are lucky to have several different comic books represented on television, there’s a mutant-shaped hole in the programming. I feel like a live-action, serialized take on the X-Men needs to happen, and it’s a possibility. Read more about the X-Men on TV, watch a new promo for Fear the Walking Dead, get an update on Mulder and Scully’s relationship, and more in today’s TV-Cap.

A Deeper Look. It’s just over two weeks until the premiere of Fear the Walking Dead on August 27th, and AMC is releasing all the teasers. A new four-minute video goes behind the scenes with the producers and cast to paint a picture of what the world is like in the beginning of the apocalypse in Los Angeles–they’ll be exploring “how a society unravels.” It’s not exactly new information, but it provides a more in-depth look at the state of things. Mutants on TV. Could you imagine a weekly dose of live-action mutants? I can, and I think it sounds glorious. Fox has the keys to the X-Men franchise at the moment, and they are in negotiations with Marvel to bring a television show set in the X-Men movie universe to the small screen. Fox dropped the news at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour and said they’re “not closed on a deal yet, but it’s something we’re definitely pursuing.” If they move forward, I’m guessing the heavy hitters like Wolverine and Magneto would stick to the films. But that’s OK, there are plenty of mutants in the Marvel universe to keep things interesting. [Nerdist]

Whodunnit? ABC Family has found series regular actors for the pilot of Guilt. The drama is loosely based on the real life story of Amanda Knox. In Guilt, an American in London is suspected of murdering her roommate, and the series follows the investigation. Billy Zane has been cast as Stan Gutterie, an American defense attorney working in London. Daisy Head will play Grace, the girl under investigation, and Katrina Law will play her older sister. [Deadline]

Signing the Guest Book. American Horror Story: Hotel has yet another guest dropping by for the upcoming season. Series co-creator Ryan Murphy confirmed Madchen Amick (Twin Peaks) will play a mother of a boy who becomes ill. Amick will share scenes with Chloe Sevigny, who’s playing a doctor. [TVLine]

Adventures in the Way-Back. DreamWorks rebooted Mr. Peabody and Sherman for a film in 2014, but that’s not enough. DreamWorks Animation is bringing new stories to Netflix in a 13-episode series debuting October 9th. The boy and his dog will still travel through time with Peabody’s WABAC Machine, but the duo is also keeping busy by hosting a late night comedy show from their Manhattan penthouse. Their guests? Folks like Mozart and Edgar Allan Poe, obviously. [Nerdist]

Carter 2.0. When Agent Carter returns for its second season, it will find Peggy Carter and Jarvis in Hollywood. They’ll be investigating a special case and fighting an adjusted-for-the-time-period version of Madame Masque. Slashfilm spoke with executive producers Tara Butters and Chris Dingess about the villain. Butters said Madame Masque has changed in that, “I think we’ve changed the look of her a bit obviously. We’ve made her an actress, which is very Hedy Lamarr. She was a ‘40s siren actress who was also a scientific genius, so that’s part of what we’re mining with this character.” Ooh. Masque has been cast, too, but Butters said they’re not allowed to announce the actress yet. Read the entire conversation with Butters and Dingess about Masque and other Season 2 tidbits at /Film.

Emphasis On the X. Stop reading now if you don’t want to know anything about The X-Files revival. Fox made something official at the TCAs: Mulder and Scully are currently not romantically involved. It could change over the course of the six-episode return, but brace yourself in case it doesn’t. [Nerdist]

Hungry Lyons. The ambition of the Lyon family in Empire can’t be questioned. They don’t kid around. A trailer for Season 2 shows both Andre and Cookie maneuvering against Lucious. And if you think a little thing like jail will keep Lucious out of the fight, you’d be wrong. Plus, the new footage shows off guest stars Marisa Tomei and Chris Rock. Empire returns on September 23rd. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Busting Out Again. Limited event sequel series are the way to go if you want to bring back a familiar franchise without going the full reboot path. Well, they’re an option. Heroes is doing it, The X-Files is doing it, and so is Prison Break. Fox confirmed at the TCAs that the series starring Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell will return for a 10-episode limited series that will be “a bit of a sequel.” Series creator Paul Scheuring is penning it, and Fox Television Group co-chair/CEO Dan Walden said it “picks up a few years after” the first series finale. Miller and Purcell are on board as are other original actors from the show. The plan is to air the event series in the 2016-17 season. [Variety]

Dinosaurs + Trucks. Dinotrux are a thing. And yes, they are what they sound like: dinosaur truck hybrids. The Dinotrux are the stars of another animated series from DreamWorks Animation headed to Netflix. The cartoon will premiere on August 14th, and we’ve got an exclusive look at the opening credits of the adaptation of the Dinotrux books by Chris Gall. Watch the clip right here.

Fresh Blood. The New York Police Department’s 99th precinct is getting a new captain: Bill Hader will be stepping into the role on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Hader’s character will be replacing Andre Braugher, and this new captain is described as “efficient.” Hader is currently slated to guest star on the Season 3 premiere (airing September 27th), but it doesn’t look like there’s a recurring plan in place.
