Do yourself a favor and do not do a shot every time I mention Netflix in today’s TV-Cap. The streaming service is churning out so much content that it might have dominated the news even without its presentation at the Television Critics Association press tour yesterday. I can’t believe how much original content they’re developing. Keep reading for updates on Netflix series such as Jessica Jones and Longmire, to learn about the latest comic book-inspired pilot pick-up, and more.
Blow Business. Netflix’s Narcos will arrive on August 28th, and they’ve just released the first batch of key art for the drug-focused series. Set in the late ’80s, Narcos focuses on some of the most well-known drug movers and the law enforcement units that try to take them down. The posters feature Wagner Moura as Pablo Escobar, Pedro Pascal as Javier Pena, Boyd Holbrook as Steve Murphy, and Juan Pablo Raba as Gustavo.
No Waiting. You won’t have to wait long for the debut of Marvel’s next Netflix series. Netflix confirmed at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour that Jessica Jones will premiere in the fourth quarter of 2015. That’s practically around the corner. The series stars Krysten Ritter, David Tennant, and Mike Colter, and I’m so looking forward to seeing how they continue building the universe established in Daredevil. [Nerdist]
The Rundown. While we’re still on the topic of Netflix, let’s review other highlights from their TCA presentation. And let’s take a moment to applaud how much original programming has grown at Netflix in the last couple of years because wow. Anyway, highlights: Bojack Horseman will return for a 12-episode Season 3 in 2016, Season 4 of Longmire will premiere on September 10th, and Aziz Ansari’s Master of None will debut on November 6th. The Best Hair. Summer is about to peak because we can sign into Camp Firewood in two days. Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp will hit Netflix on July 31st. But, if you’re dying to escape right this second, you can watch a new featurette. It goes behind the scenes to talk about the filming experience with cast members new and old, and guys, I can’t stop staring at the wigs. I hope this will be as epic as I want it to be. [Nerdist]
Butch Is Back. Oswald Cobblepot is in prime position to flex his muscles/fins, and he’ll be keeping at least one of Fish Mooney’s goons on board in Season 2 of Gotham. Drew Powell, who plays Butch Gilzean, has been upped to series regular for the upcoming season. He’s not the brightest second-in-command, but he’s loyal and that’s all you need sometimes. Meet the King. Season 2 of Outlander has Jamie and Claire headed to Paris to try to stop the Jacobite uprising and change history. You know, no big. One key person they need to get on their side is King Louis XV. The important character has been cast–he’ll be played by Lionel Lingelser. The French actor will have a recurring role. Catching Up with the Tanners. Fuller House–the oh so cleverly named Full House reunion–is in production, and there are all kinds of updates. I know you’re dying to hear them. First of all, remember Nicky and Alex Katsopolis? Blake and Dylan Tuomy-Wilhoit are all grown up, and they’re reprising their roles as the twins. And on the topic of twins, the Olsen twins are basically the only characters not returning. However, that could change. Netflix’s Ted Sarandos said the Olsen twins are not entirely on board but that there is the possibility of guest appearances. Huh. I want to know what Michelle thinks of Danny Tanner’s new wife, Teri. It was announced this week that she’s being played by Eva LaRue. [TVLine, /Film]
Making Rounds. When The Mindy Project’s Mindy goes on maternity leave next season (which will air on Hulu–look, a streaming service that’s not Netflix!), she’ll need a doctor to step in and take care of her patients. That doctor will be played by Garret Dillahunt (who has been in one thousand things but will always be John Henry from The Sarah Connor Chronicles to me). Dillahunt’s Jody is a “charming southern gentleman with extremely traditional values who thinks that Mindy is a tacky idiot.” I don’t fully agree, but I see where he’s coming from. [Deadline]
Time, Space, Cinemas. Some TV shows deserve movie theater scale, and Doctor Who is definitely one of them. BBC has partnered with Fathom Events before for screenings and this time around, they’ll be showing the Series 8 finale in 3D. “Dark Water” and “Death in Heaven” will play in 700 cinemas on September 15th and 16th. Werewolves On the Streets. USA is going a little genre. They’ve picked up a pilot for Brooklyn Animal Control. Based on the comic book of the same name published by IDW and written by J.T. Petty with art by Stephen Thompson, the story focuses on a secret subdivision of the NYPD that helps a unique group of residents. And by unique, I mean they’re werewolves. The pilot will be written and executive produced by Petty, David S. Goyer, Rick Jacobs, and David Alpert.
