TV-Cap: GRAVITY FALLS Ending, Colton Haynes Returning to ARROW, and More

Who else binged Jessica Jones this weekend? I can tell by the haunted look in your eyes. It was hard to swallow but oh so fantastic. I’m going to need to switch to something cheerful this week, like Master of None. While I ponder my palate cleansing choices, read today’s TV-Cap to learn about the end of Gravity Falls, to see an extended trailer for The Flash/Arrow crossover, and to find out about Colton Haynes’ return to Arrow.

AKA Wow. Marvel’s Jessica Jones debuted on Netflix three days ago, and it’s the kind of series that makes an impression. Krysten Ritter is tremendous as Jessica, and David Tennant is ridiculously creepy as Kilgrave. Read my review of the first four episodes.

Taking a Bow. Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, took to Tumblr with some sad news on Friday. He’s bringing the Disney XD animated series to a close with the end of Season 2. It’s completely his choice, and he’s planned the move for a while. While it’s a complete bummer, I respect when creators end stories on their own terms. [Nerdist]

Thawing on TV. The CW is developing a drama about a doctor successfully resurrects cryogenically preserved people. Cry will be written and executive produced by Kerry Lenhart and John J. Sakmar and focuses on the both the positive and negative consequences of unfreezing people. Since it’s a drama, I’m guessing there won’t be many jokes about popsicles. [Deadline]

Headed Into Orbit. Reboot is a popular word around Hollywood these days, and it’s currently being used in conjunction with Lost in Space. The drama from the ’60s will be revamped by Netflix as “an epic but grounded science fiction saga focusing on a young explorer family from Earth lost in an alien universe and the challenges they face in staying together against seemingly insurmountable odds.” Well, it wouldn’t be as entertaining if the odds weren’t insurmountable. Helmet Do-Over? Diggle finally got a disguise on this season of Arrow, but it’s not amazing. His helmet has a Magneto look about it, and while I think it looks better in action than it did in promo stills, it could be better. David Ramsey appeared at Heroes & Villains Fan Fest over the weekend and said during a panel that the helmet will get a redesign courtesy of Cisco at STAR Labs. Whew. [The Flash Podcast]

Roy Returns. Colton Haynes is coming back to Arrow for at least one episode in Season 4. Roy Harper was always meant to come back, Arrow showrunner Marc Guggenheim said, it was just a matter of writing the right story. Is anyone else wondering if Roy will be the unfortunate person who ends up in the grave we saw in the season premiere? [Nerdist]

Rumors Crushed. Marvel has so many series in the works for Netflix it’s easy to lose track. We had Daredevil, Jessica Jones just dropped, Luke Cage is on the horizon, and then there’s Iron Fist. Nothing’s been announced for Iron Fist yet—no crew or cast—and a rumor circulated over the summer that Marvel might be putting Iron Fist to rest. But Jeph Loeb talked to Comic Book Resources about the series and said, there’s never been any change and yes, there’ll be news. Patience, Padawans, patience. [Nerdist]

Doctor Who Double Down. Doctor Who is one of those series that deserves dissection and often needs it, and we’re here to slice and dice. We launched The Doctor Who Companion over the weekend. It’s a live-streamed fan show with hosts Michele Morrow and Matt Acevedo talking about the latest episode with special guests and all of you. This week, the show was all about “Face the Raven.” Watch the episode (embedded above) and get more analysis with Kyle’s review. New episodes of The Doctor Who Companion will air on Saturdays at 10:15pm ET on YouTube after new episodes of Doctor Who.

It’s a Cycle. An extended look at The Flash/Arrow crossover airing on December 1 and 2 reveals a tiny bit more of Vandal Savage and a lot more of Hawkman and Hawkgirl’s origin story. In that regard, it’s a little spoilery to non-comic book readers but only a little. Also, it’s exhilarating. [Comic Book Resources]

Are you sad about Gravity Falls? What hopes do you have for Diggle’s new helmet? Sound off in the comments.
