TV-Cap: David Lynch Is Back for TWIN PEAKS, a Trailer for THE MAGICIANS, & More

Television punched me in the gut repeatedly over the weekend. Those of you who watch Outlander and Game of Thrones know what I’m talking about. To help cleanse my palette and reset my brain, I plan to watch nothing but lighthearted comedies or animated films tonight. Besides Outlander’s trip to the worst prison ever, today’s TV-Cap has news about the Twin Peaks revival, the first trailer for The Magicians, news about The Mindy Project, and more.

Magic Is Real. Are you ready to go to a fancy school to learn magic–a school that’s not Hogwarts? That’s what Syfy has in store for you with their adaptation of Lev Grossman’s The Magicians. The first trailer follows Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) as he learns about the Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy. That doesn’t sound preppy at all. The Magicians premieres in 2016. Wentworth Prison Blues. Outlander went there in the penultimate Season 1 episode. If you’ve read the books, you went in with an idea of what to expect from “Wentworth Prison,” but that certainly didn’t make it any easier to watch. Jamie Fraser was tortured by Black Jack Randall and it all went downhill from there. Read Alicia’s recap.

Home on Hulu. Mindy Kaling’s The Mindy Project was cancelled by Fox, but it’s found a way to continue. Hulu has ordered a fourth season consisting of 26 episodes. [Give Me My Remote]

Riff-Off Time. Add a dose of aca-awesome to your Monday because Anna Kendrick stopped by The Late Late Show with James Corden and challenged the host to a Pitch Perfect-style riff-off with some help from The Filharmonics. They’ve both got some serious a cappella skills, and I appreciate any time someone pulls out NSYNC tunes. And Kendrick singing “Love Is a Battlefield?” Forget about it. [Vulture]

Fire Walk Again. Take a triumphant swig of your coffee, ladies and gents, because David Lynch is back on board for Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival. Lynch departed the project over contract issues, but apparently Showtime shaped up. Lynch took to Twitter to announce he’ll be returning, and Showtime’s president David Nevins said Lynch will direct every episode and that the project has grown beyond the nine hours that were previously announced. The series is currently in pre-production. [Nerdist]

All the Gratitude. The CW brought the Scarlet Speedster to life with The Flash, and Season 1 of the series wraps up tomorrow night. Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/The Flash) shared the latest trailer for the episode, titled “Fast Enough,” on Facebook and took the opportunity to thank fans for tuning in. And in possible news about the episode, Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow) seems to be hinting that Killer Frost is coming. [Comic Book Movie and Comic Book Resources]

Qualms Aplenty. It was announced back in January that Woody Allen had teamed up with Amazon for a full season of a half-hour show to premiere exclusively on Prime Instant Video. The expected premiere date is 2016. It’s interesting because Allen doesn’t even know what a streaming service is and doesn’t watch much television. But Amazon pursued him, and in an interview with Deadline at Cannes, Allen said, “I have regretted every second since I said OK.” He’s having a hard time figuring out the format, saying, “I haven’t had a pleasurable moment since I undertook it.” He’s still planning to turn the series in by the end of 2016, but it sounds like the process is going slowly. Read the rest of the interview at Deadline.

It’s Getting Serious. Season 2 of HBO’s True Detective premieres on June 21. The upcoming season brings Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, and Vince Vaughn with it, and they are not messing around. A new trailer shows the barest of hints at the action and also how badass McAdams’s character is. [Nerdist]

A Salute to Letterman. David Letterman takes a bow from late night television in mere days (specifically on May 20), but Jon Stewart got his goodbye in early. He spoke about Letterman on The Daily Show last week and has all the nice things to say about the comedian and shares a warm and fuzzy memory. Aww.
