Happy Star Wars Day! That has absolutely nothing to do with today’s TV-Cap, but it feels wrong not to work in a May the Fourth Be With You. That out of the way, let’s get to television news. Keep reading to see key art for season two of Powers, to find out about a Blues Brothers animated series, to watch Tituss Burgess and John Stamos sing a tune from The Little Mermaid, and more.
Getting Dramatic. The cast of PlayStation’s Powers will be faced with a very serious question in season two: Who killed Retro Girl? The storyline is based on the comic of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. A dramatic topic requires dramatic poses, and the cast delivers that in spades in new key art. He’ll Be Back. Kevin Smith took the helm for one episode of The Flash in the current season—”The Runaway Dinosaur” airs on May 10—and he apparently made a good impression. Smith will return to set in August to direct an episode for season three. [Comic Book Resources]
We Can Dream. Star Trek is coming back with a new series in the not-so-distant future. Production will begin this fall, so we’ll likely hear casting news soon. But, because we’re dreamers, we’re fancasting. Blair put together some choice selections—yes, even though we don’t know the roles. View them and weigh in right this way.
Getting Romantic. Tituss Burgess and John Stamos are appearing in a live production of The Little Mermaid in June at the Hollywood Bowl. Burgess will play Sebastian and Stamos is playing Chef Louis. Weirdly enough, they were not promoting this when they appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden recently, but they sang a bit of “Kiss the Girl” anyway and it’s delightful. I’m so, so glad I have tickets to see the production. [Nerdist]
Additions Ahead. Legends of Tomorrow is starting to prep for season two. It’s unknown how much of the original cast will be around once the finale ends, but we do know about two new cast members in series regular roles. The show is casting for a male that’s “used a Han Solo-like facade to conceal his insecurity” in regards to living up to his family legacy and for a female that’s a member of an elite paramilitary team in the 1940s. Sure, Why Not? A remake of The Blue Brothers was inevitable, right? But did you think it would come back as an animated series? The Blue Brothers will be developed and produced by Bento Box Entertainment (BBE) with Dan Aykroyd and Judy Belushi on board as executive producers. BBE will be shopping the series around as a primetime offering; it will follow the adventures of Jake and Elwood Blues.
Drama + Elegance. Oh, period costume dramas. I cannot resist thee. It looks like my Amazon Prime watch list will soon include Julian Fellowes Presents Doctor Thorne. The British series will arrive to the streaming service on May 20 and stars the likes of Ian McShane and Alison Brie. It has an elopement with an unworthy wife, money problems, and all the hallmarks you’d expect from such a series. [Deadline]
Gird Your DVR. Are you ready to dial back the clock and live in the early ’00s again? You can do so by watching your favorite Disney Channel shows from way back when on Freeform. The network has launched a segment called That’s So Throwback; it’s a late night block of programming including Lizzie McGuire, That’s So Raven, Hannah Montana, and Kim Possible. They’ll air Monday-Thursday from midnight to 2 am. Oh boy! [Oh My Disney]
Earth Problems. Tuesday night featured two comic book series in different universes, but the villains in both wanted to take over the world. I guess it’s a rather basic bad guy goal. And yes, I mean basic that way. Read our reviews of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Flash.
