Turn Your Xbox One Into a Dev Kit… If You Dare

Finding a series of button inputs to unlock hidden features has been a gaming pastime since time immemorial. From the Konami Code to being able to destroy the SEGA logo in Vectorman, gamers just have an insatiable urge to hack the planet and find chinks in the developmental armor. According to redditor LiamHing, a series of button inputs in the Xbox One menu can transform your standard next-gen console into a development kit, as demonstrated in this video from YouTube’s GameTuts.

LiamHing first posted about the hidden functionality over the weekend. By entering the Settings and System menu, pressing Left Bumper, Right Bumper, Left Trigger and Right Trigger in rapid succession, you can unlock a hidden Developer Settings menu item wherein you can select the option to “Enable devkit.” Those who do will need to enter a Sandbox ID in the console, which is only issued to registered developers, so proceed at your own risk. Redditor XboxOneDev, who is tagged as an official Xbox One developer on Reddit, warned against enabling this mode in a comment on the thread: “”Please don’t mess with anything here for the time being, especially the sandbox ID. You risk putting your box into a boot loop.”

XboxOneDev also noted that he has “no idea how far along the ID@Xbox program is” and there are “many concerns such as privacy, security, stability etc…, that need to be sorted out before we can allow anyone and everyone to simply sideload an app onto their box.” In a statement in August, corporate vice president Marc Whitten said that “every Xbox One can be used for development,” although the functionality would not be ready for the console’s launch corridor. As of this time, Polygon has reached out to Microsoft about this hidden feature, but has not received word back. We will also be following up and will keep you posted if we hear anything ourselves. In the meantime, it sounds like you’d be better off just enjoying another round of Forza or something less console-breaking.
