Trust Us: Jessica Harrison’s Tattooed Porcelain Dolls Are Punk as Frak

We know: porcelain dolls hardly seem very punk or badass, but trust us when we tell you: Scottish artist Jessica Harrison‘s dolls sure as shit are. Because her mixing of high-and-lowbrow sensibilities — combining said porcelain dolls with intricate and beautiful sailor-style tattoos covering their arms, backs, and chests — is about as disruptive to the status quo as you can be. Therefore? Punk as hell, you guys. Punk as hell and cool, to boot.

The sculptures are all hand-made by Harrison and are a variation of ceramic work that she’s become quite known for. A quick Google image search will show you some of her more visceral and arresting work. These punk rock fancy ladies are all a part of her exhibit called “Flash,” Harrison’s first-ever Paris-based solo show. It opened on May 15th at Galerie L.J. and will be on display through June 24th. So, you know, if you just so happen to be in Paris sometime in the next month — go and tell us how it was!

Before you think all of this is just counterculture for the sake of, though, try again. Harrison’s work is focused on the relationship between the exterior and interior bits of our wee human existence, looking “neither inwards towards a hidden core, nor outwards from the subconscious, instead looking orthogonally across the skin to the movement of the body itself, using the surface of the body as a mode of both looking and thinking,” as her biography explains. And certainly the relationship between these two diametrically opposed ideals — porcelain dolls, all externally focused with their alabaster perfection and tattoos, the rugged mark of an interior spirit — do exactly that, focusing on the manifestation of the intersection between the two.

She’s also got some funky flesh furniture, too, if that’s more up your alley (you creepy artistic creeps that I respect but am also a little bit frightened of).

What do you think of Harrison’s work? Let us know in the comments.
