TRUE DETECTIVE Will Have Multiple Directors Next Season

There’s no question the hottest show on television right now is the freshman season of HBO’s stellar cop drama, True Detective. With both its leads, as well as its writing and directing team on the fast track to multiple Emmy wins, many are beginning to wonder what the show has in store for next season. While its already known the series will be following the American Horror Story model and completely rebooting in season 2, apparently that reboot will also be done behind the camera.

The current season has worked very hard to maintain a unique vision by taking a step many series do not, keeping a single director on staff  for every episode. While that’s doable for this series because there are only eight episodes to worry about, series creator Nic Pizzolato recently revealed that won’t be the plan next time around. “We don’t have any plans to work with one director again. It would be impossible to do this yearly as we need to be able to do post while we’re still filming, like any other show.”

So now the question becomes who can the show get? Well, since Cary Fukunaga came out of the indie feature world with fan favorites Sin Nobre and Jane Eyre, let’s start by keeping our suggestions limited to that realm, as well as the realm of television directors.

Some possibilities that would certainly kill it on the directing front for season two include Rian Johnson (Breaking Bad, Looper), Craig Brewer (Terriers, Hustle & Flow), David Nutter (Arrow, Game of Thrones), Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones), Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland, The Newsroom) and Michael Cuesta (Homeland, Dexter).

And of course we can’t have a True Detective post without speculating on possible actors to lead season two, so we polled a few Nerdist.com staffers to find out their picks:

Enrico Colantoni and Lupita Nyong’o (Merrill Barr)

Sam Rockwell and Michael B. Jordan (Alicia Lutes)

Katee Sackhoff and Alan Tudyk (Dan Casey)

Jamie Foxx and John Barrowman (Merrill Barr)

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Parker Posey (Alicia Lutes)

Robert Redford and Dylan O’Brien (Merrill Barr)

Michael Keaton and Robert Downey Jr (Clarke Wolfe)

Patrick Wilson and Griffin Dunne (Dan Casey)

In the meantime, we’ll always have the hilarity of #TrueDetectiveSeason2. Who do you think should direct and star next season?
