TRUE DETECTIVE, GAME OF THRONES, BREAKING BAD Lead 2014 Emmy Nominations

Feels like a year since last we talked about the highest award on the small screen, the Emmys, well, because it has. But as of this morning, the nominations are in and the overwhelming thing that’s clear this year is that the television academy decided to play things safe, though some predictions proved true. For example, True Detective did indeed take award nominations in the best drama category for the trifecta of acting, writing and directing, most importantly for Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. And Breaking Bad also made out nicely for its final round of Emmy play with nominations for best actor, best supporting actress, best supporting actor and best series (in addition, of course, to best writing and directing).

Sadly, there were many snubs this year as, once again, Tatiana Maslany was overlooked for her spellbinding performances on Orphan Black. In addition, James Spader was left out of the best actor category for The Blacklist and Brooklyn Nine-Nine did not land a nomination for best comedy, though Andre Braugher did snag a best supporting actor nomination for the series. We have to imagine the puppies had something to do with that.

Some of the other happier nominations include another for MythBusters in the best reality category, a nomination in “best documentary series” for Cosmos, ones for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report respectively in best variety, a best TV movie nomination for The Normal Heart, best comedy nominations for HBO’s newest breakout hit, Silicon Valley, Netflix’s most popular original series, Orange is the New Black, and FX’s Louie, as well as a first-time nomination in the best animated series category for FX’s Archer. DANGER ZONE!

Once again, we’re looking at a year where not a single broadcast series has been nominated for drama, not even The Good Wife. Also, for you stats folks, Game of Thrones leads the year with 19 nominations, and HBO with 99. And finally, it looks like there’s nomination in there for @Midnight in the best interactive series category. YAY! Nerd overlord strikes again!

  1. Dawn says:

WTF is with Breaking Bad? that show has been off the air for like a year now.  Snubs to Walking Dead, Supernatural, Sons of Anarchy, Orphan Black? …who picks the nominees anyway?

  2. Dota says:

Surprised that watchers in the wall episode of GoT ssn4 was the nomination for best direction. It was the most disappointing one to me as I moved through the season, though perhaps the most difficult.

  3. twitter_SweetGeekling says:

Sad that Community didn’t get any mentions, because that show is bursting at the seams with talent, but very proud of @midnight!  Congrats to our Nerd King, and everyone else who works so hard to make it so fantastic!!

  4. Shane Burke says:

Why is it that The Walking Dead keeps getting snubbed by the Emmy’s? Its just B.S.

  5. Justus says:

    No Hannibal? Travesty.

  6. Porsche says:

I’m surprised there was not a mention of the @midnight nomination. I know it would be self-serving, but this should be acknowledged in the very least.

  7. Doddy Bigital says:

I’m sorry, Tatiana Maslany is good, but she’s getting overburdened. Most of her accents are pretty bad, and the talents that she does put on display were wasted on a shitty plot this season.

Overall, when you actually suspend your disbelief and stop wowing over the fact that she plays five or six characters, the show can be pretty awful at times. Unpopular opinion, I know, but… for real.

  8. Lavinda says:

I don’t understand why Eva Green is not on here for Penny Dreadful! Did the show miss the eligibility date?

  9. Kerri says:

Her name is Diana Rigg not Diane.

  10. Axelsanx says:

NO ORPHAN BLACK, NO THE WALKING DEAD, NO THE BRIDGE!  Hell, Falling Skies is better than most of the shows on their list.  And when will Doctor Who get a break.  And Breaking Bad was still around in 2014?

    • Luanne says:

eligibility period was June 1, 2013 through May 31st of this year, so BrBa’s last season fits in the time period

  11. Matt Ceccato says:

Nothing against “Orange is the New Black,” but it’s too serious to be a comedy.  Having said that, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” was robbed.

  12. Martijn says:

Again, no The Walking Dead? How about “look at the flowers” episode?Weird…

  13. elSpanielo says:

I’m shocked Fargo didn’t get more nods. But it is funny to see Sherlock and Watson go up against each other for different shows.

    • Doddy Bigital says:

I’m incredibly confused by this statement… It got a nomination in every eligible category. ??

  14. Luanne says:

I am shocked that Dean Norris was not nominated for Breaking Bad as Hank#tsktsk
