Back in 1986, Transformers: The Movie traumatized children with the death of Optimus Prime and several Generation 1 Autobots while paving the way for a new lineup of heroes and villains. Thirty years later, the legacy of that film lives on as the Canadian cover band The Cybertronic Spree performs songs from the movie in full cosplay as Transformers characters.
Via Bleeding Cool, The Cybertronic Spree debuted a video of their cover of Stan Bush and Vince DiCola’s “Dare” earlier this month, but they have been posting covers of songs from Transformers: The Movie on YouTube since 2013. We really admire their commitment to the band’s gimmick, since they even credit themselves as Hotrod, Arcee, Rumble, Unicron, a Quintesson, Bumblebee, and Soundwave; with Spike Witwicky as the token human in the group.
It’s fitting that the very first video posted by The Cybertronic Spree was a cover of Bush’s “The Touch,” which is the most famous song from Transformers: The Movie, with an assist from Boogie Nights. Last year, the band posted an in-studio cover of “The Touch” that’s more polished than their earlier take on the song.
So far, the group appears to be content with being a cover band. The Cybertronic Spree does have a Bandcamp page, which includes a cover of the Ghostbusters theme and an original song called “Deceptifunk,” along with the band’s merchandise.
