It’s that time of year again — the trailer for Woody Allen’s latest, Magic in the Moonlight is here for your viewing pleasure. Set in the 1930s mostly in the South of France, it’s got all the hallmarks of Woody Allen whimsy, a welcome turn towards the lighthearted after last year’s gut wrenching and excellent Blue Jasmine.
Old guy-sweet young thing pairing du jour is Colin Firth as the greatest de-bunker of fake spiritualists and Emma Stone as the current spiritualist in question. She may or may not be swindling a family of socialites, and dashing Firth is sent to investigate. Rounding out the Downton-Abbey-meets-Grand-Budapest-Hotel-style farce is a delightful cast featuring Jacki Weaver, Hamish Linklater, and Marcia Gay Harden. You’ve got tennis matches, a romantic-couple-caught-in-the-rain scene, seances, a charming mix of accents from the Continent (and a conspicuous lack thereof), and lots of hats. What’s not to like? Check out the trailer.
Magic in the Moonlight hits theaters in limited release July 25, 2014.
Colin Firth is the most handsome, charming and erudite man alive. Leave Woody out of this. He may or may not be a creep. I can’t wait to see this film. The bad so called journalist for Indiwire who wrote an outrageously biased anti-woody bad review of this film should be fired for her professionalism. Her review was solely based on her anti-woody bias and not sound criticism of the film.
Allegations are just that, allegations. Woody is a wonderful filmmaker and until someone shows me something definitive, I will not stop watching his films, laughing at his stand up, or praising his brilliance.
There something nerdy about a Woody Allen movie. Sure the situation of the past is or isn’t haunting him. Allen is still going to make good movies. The only way he going to stop making good movies for us to talk about is if he dead. Or murder over the accusations of the past. Or get caught doing what people though he did in the past.
Larry, I know how you feel. I don’t care for Michael Jackson because of the things he was accused of. Woody Allen is living and breathing and isn’t incurring the wrath of the US Justice Department. That being said, the actors who are working with him and the people promoting this movie have either forgiven him, or are working through their feelings about the situation.
Woody Allen recently starred in John Turturro’s moving Fading Gigilo. For what it’s worth, he made the movie better, but his presence either turned people away who feel the way you do, or attracted others who look to his value on the screen.
I guess what I’m saying is, the entertainment industry is made up of people, like you and me. People with their own faults and vices. If you feel that you can not support these people, it’s your time and money at the end of the day.
It would be nice if The Nerdist had the balls to not promote this. I’m a long time supporter of this website and Chris Hardwick. His book helped pull me out of a bad time and helped me find focus. But seeing them support this wrenches my respect for Nerdist industries.
Why shouldn’t they support this? Woody hasn’t been found guilty of anything.
