Trailer for JODOROWSKY’S DUNE Explores The Wacky Movie That Was Never Made

Frank Herbert’s Dune has been adapted again and again. Notably, there’s the 1984 version directed by David Lynch, and the 2000 mini-series directed by John Harrison. The Dune you never saw, however, was the one Alejandro Jodorowsky envisioned. Director Frank Pavich is changing that with his documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune.

The film examines the development of Jodorowsky’s take on the science fiction book and how the film fell apart. Jodorowsky’s perspective on the story is grand and sweeping. He wanted to show Herbert’s world in a trippy way that looks like it might have worked. In his own words, Jodorowsky wanted to make “a film that gives LSD hallucinations – without taking LSD.” Given the storyboards we see in the trailer, I think he might have accomplished that goal.

As you can see from the trailer, Jodorowsky had talent on his side. H.R. Giger was on board to handle the creature designs, and the cast would have included the likes of Salvador Dali and David Carradine. If I possessed a time machine, I’d travel back and do everything possible to get this iteration of “Dune” made.

The official synopsis reveals more:

“Through interviews with legends and luminaries including HR Giger (artist, Alien), Gary Kurtz (producer, Star Wars) and Nicolas Winding Refn (director, Drive and Only God Forgives), and an intimate and honest conversation with Jodorowsky filmed over the course of three years, director Pavich’s film – featuring never-before-seen realizations of Jodo’s mind-blowing psychedelic space opera (animated by Emmy Award nominated Syd Garon) – finally unearths the full saga of ‘The Greatest Movie Never Made’.”

Jodorowsky’s Dune opens on March 21st. Will you be seeing it? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Jon says:

I think it should be made as an anime, with the art stile of the drawings. With actors and costumes I think it would make an interesting movie, but I feel with the psychedelic designs, animation is the only real way to go.

  2. Mike says:

I saw this at the Toronto Film Festival, and it is bonkers. If Jodorowsky had actually made Dune, it would have probably been the most nonsensical, pretentious, and epically long piece of drug induced insanity ever produced.
